Highland Bakery NOT Affiliated With New Virginia Highland Business

Atlanta's beloved Highland Bakery refutes claim that it is affiliated with new business.

A new business tentatively called "Coffee & Pastry" is opening soon in Virginia Highland.  The shop is opening at 992 North Highland Avenue, near the intersection of Virginia & Highland Avenues, in a space most recently home to Aurora Coffee. Aurora Coffee closed last May and now operates exclusively out of their Little 5 Points location.  (Months ago, Athens-based Jittery Joe's was reportedly interested in this same space, but that deal never came to fruition.)

Another blog in town reported yesterday that that "Coffee & Pastry" was being opened by the owners of Highland Bakery.  I found this surprising given the unimaginative name and rather small location.  I reached out to Highland Bakery for comment.

According to Allison Brady, Marketing & Sales Manager for Ingrained Inc. dba Highland Bakery, "We are not currently involved in any project at that address [992 North Highland Avenue] but it's a great space and anyone would be lucky to have it."

According to public records available from the City of Atlanta, a man named Henry Schwab is the one renovating the space.  The renovations are largely in an effort to bring the older building up to code as must be done when opening a new business.  While Schwab is reportedly an architect by trade, his LinkedIn profile suggests he has at least some experience in the food and beverage industry.  According to his profile, Schwab owned Broadway Grill & Cabaret in Sandy Springs.  It would seem as though Schwab himself may be the one opening the new establishment although it remains unclear why or how the connection with Highland Bakery was made.

Highland Bakery has locations in Old Fourth Ward, Midtown, Buckhead (at the Atlanta Financial Center), and on the campuses of Georgia Tech and Emory University

Highland Bakery had their food truck parked out in front of the former Aurora space during Summerfest. Rumors have swirled ever since. I was hoping they were true, but honestly I'm glad to have anyone take over the space. It's been vacant for too long.
