Toco Hills Coin Laundry Washed Out at Toco Hills

Longtime Toco Hills laundromat latest business to announce closure

Toco Hills Coin Laundry, which has operated at Toco Hills shopping center for decades, will be closing in the coming weeks.  The business was reportedly not offered a lease renewal by Edens, the Columbia, SC based developer who signed a 35 year ground lease on the property in late 2015.

The 2,000 square foot Toco Hills Coin Laundry is located in an outparcel of the center and is adjacent to Toco Giant Package Store, a store that is reportedly remanining in the center.

Following Toco Hills Coin Laundry's closure, the next closest laundromat would be Atomic Coin Laundry on Briarcliff Road, near Clairmont Road.

As I previously reported, The Nearly New Shop, a service of the Junior League of Atlanta, is also closing at Toco Hills.  According to JLA president Deanna Anderson, the decision to close the store was not due to the center's change in direction, but was instead due to the store no longer being a "sustainable fundraising model." The store is currently offering at least 50% off all merchandise with plans to close for good April 30th.

In addition to The Nearly New Shop and Toco Hills Coin Laundry, a number of other longstanding Toco Hills businesses have closed or relocated in the past year or so.

The Shoe Center was the first to close.  The popular footwear retailer operated out of Toco Hills for 14 years before closing last summer. Famous Pub, which opened at Toco Hills in 1986, closed this past December.  Last month, I confirmed that Hudson Grille has leased the former Famous Pub space with plans to open later this fall.

Petite Auberge, a Toco Hills mainstay since 1974, closed at Toco Hills at the end of last year, and "merged" with Violette on Clairmont Road.

Young Chefs Academy, a popular childrens cooking class franchise, "moved" its popular Toco Hills location to Buckhead's Howell Mill Village.  According to the business' facebook page which strangely refers to the location as "Atlanta Midtown," the new Young Chefs Academy is slated to celebrate its Grand Opening Saturday, March 4th.

The Georgia Department of Labor has confirmed they are leaving the center, but it remains unclear when and where they will move.  The DOL occupies a 20,000 square foot space that is likely to be leased to a single anchor tenant but could be divided into smaller spaces.

In addition to the tenant changes, Edens has also rerouted and repaved the entire parking lot and redone many of the sidewalks and islands around the center.  Easily the oddest and seemingly most unnecessary change at the center was the installation of outdoor ceiling fans along the center's covered walkway.

Along with Hudson Grille, Spiller Park Coffee is the only other confirmed new tenant in the center.  I'm working a few leads on possible new tenants and hope to confirm at least one of them by weeks end.

Will you miss Toco Hills Coin Laundry?  What are your thoughts on the changes at Toco Hills? What restaurant, retailer or other business would you like to see open at Toco Hills?

Thank God the DOL is leaving. It attracted unemployed low information crowd.

Any word on how Taziki's is doing? The place always looks empty

This was a good laundromat. Not a big surprise on the closing though. I'm just hoping they don't close the huge liquor store. Still disgusted over them putting a Hudson Grille in the shopping center. What a waste of space.

"Unemployed low information crowd"? The person who wrote that is part of the crowd that is ruining this city. Don't you post-materialist gentrified jerks have enough space in Buckhead? Now you need Toco Hills too?

That seems like a very busy laundromat so I am sure for many that use it, it will be a big loss. But I am not surprised to hear that their lease wasn't renewed since it seems they are trying to go a different route with the shopping center.

I think DOL needs their own separate building but closer to a Marta Train station, maybe moving closer to Chamblee would be good.

I liked Famous Pub but the service there was always pretty slow. I like Hudson Grill and think that will be a good location for them.

I thought Toco Hills isn't part of a city? Too many "activists" voted it down (the only municipality to fail in forever). I guess the people who bemoan the loss of a coin laundromat are the same people who would rather not self-govern and leave it to historically corrupt county officials.

I do agree that replacing Famous with Hudson Grille is a travesty. HG is really bad.

I miss Uncle Maddios. When is that coming back?

I blame the previous landlords for allowing the center to get so rundown. Some of the tenants were constantly battling flooding, leaks, and rats for years and the previous landlords never did anything about it. They were terrible about their books – ‘free rent here, free rent there, free rent for months, no, you pay double, build-out for you but not you’...etc. It was very sloppy and poorly run. If they had been as concerned with their properties as they were with their Nature Preserve then the place might have looked a little better and Edens wouldn't have had such a mess to clean up. I don't know if this would have made a difference with the laundromat...I can't help but wonder if it had looked a little cleaner and up to date could it have stayed?

Too bad about the laundrymat. Some things just won't fit in my washer. Agree about Hudson Grille. Not a good upgrade.

I love all the people bemoaning the loss of a junky laundromat.

Definitely buried the lead here: The DOL is closing? Huge news given the size of that space. Could be a game changer for the mall.

If you only had knowledge of the plethora of grotesque "things" that went into those machines you'd never allow yourself to use them again. Take your bulky items to your (reputable) dry cleaner. The original comment about their customer base was as polite as you can get.

You mean like dirty clothes? Isn't that the point of a laundromat?

Would love a Roasters and also a CHOPT (salad bar).

"You mean like dirty clothes? Isn't that the point of a laundromat?"

Think DNA evidence and miscellaneous body fluids / semi solids. SMH "dirty clothes". Enjoy

I occasionally used the laundromat and will miss it. Now I have to find a place to wash my quilts and large bedding. The owners were nice and polite.

I agree! Laundry mats are for low class people and illegal aliens. What normal person would use a disgusting washing machine where you don't know what's been washed in them. I'm sick and tired of all the liberal nut jobs running roughshod over the rest of us! I hope they're happy they ruined our chances at cityhood; now we're going to be an island, thanks to that awful horse-thighed Marjorie Snooks and Dawn Forman, who has totally disappeared. I've heard Ms. Forman does things like this a lot - runs roughshod over a community, changes everything for the worse, then moves away to reek havoc on another unsuspecting community. This area needs a lot more upscale restaurants and stores. Hudson Grill's food is terrible, but I hope the old FP crowd returns. They're a good bunch. By the way, I thought all the liberals were supposed to move to Canada.
