Bits & Bites

A life-size version of this pop art will roll into Atlantic Station next week
Steel City Pops plans to make their Atlanta area debut next week at Atlantic Station.  The Birmingham-based pop purveyor will vend from a pop cart in Atlantic Station's "Central Park." Plans call for Steel City Pops to offer their pops Tuesday and Thursday through Sunday through September.  Their vending days will most likely remain Tuesday and Thursday through Sunday every week unless they come in for special Atlantic Station events on other days of the week. King of Pops will still be available in Atlantic Station at Land of a Thousand Hills coffee shop.   Interestingly enough, Steel City gets its name from the fact that Birmingham used to be known as the "Pittsburgh of the South," given their steel production, and Atlantic Station is built on the former home of Atlantic Steel Company. As I exclusively reported last week, Steel City Pops is expected to open their first Atlanta area location later this summer in Decatur.  The "kitchen store" will supply pops for other upcoming local "satellite stores."  Sources say that the pops for Atlantic Station will be produced in Birmingham until the Decatur shop is built out.

New Cook Out restaurants are planned in Cordele on 16th Avenue and in Americus on Hudson Street.  The North Carolina-based chain also has locations coming soon to Macon, Hinesville and Warner Robins, which when completed, will being their Georgia total to nearly 40 locations.

Men's apparel retailer Bachrach is closing its three stores in metro Atlanta.  The stores, which opened in 2013, are all located in Simon Property Group malls: Lenox Square in Buckhead, Town Center at Cobb in Kennesaw and Mall of Georgia in Buford.  The Town Center store indicated to me that they are closing this Sunday, whereas the other two stores seemed to suggest that they will remain open for a few more weeks, or until in-stock merchandise is depleted.  As a company, Bachrach dates from 1877, but I questioned the brand's prospects when they reopened at the malls in 2013 after closing in Atlanta a few years earlier.

Mix'd Up Burgers opened their first brick & mortar location this past Monday at Hosea Williams Drive and 2nd Avenue in East Lake.  The new food truck turned restaurant joins the Greater Good BBQ and Poor Henrix, a gastropub, as restaurants in the Hosea + 2nd development.

A new franchised Bojangles' location opened yesterday at the corner of Delk Road and Franklin Gateway in Marietta near the new Atlanta United FC training facility.

Studio Movie Grill has confirmed their plans to open a new theater in Marietta.  The new location will open in place of the long shuttered Sports Authority in the Harry's Farmers market anchored center on Powers Ferry Road near Roswell Road, not far from The Big Chicken.  According to the Studio Movie Grill website, the new location will feature 1,285 luxury seats housed in 11 auditoriums. The Dallas, Texas-based company operates two other locations in metro Atlanta, in Roswell/Alpharetta which opened in 2010 in a former A&P grocery store, and in Duluth in a former Circuit City, which opened in 2012. Real estate sources also indicate that North American Properties is in talks with Studio Movie Grill to join the redevelopment of Colony Square in midtown.

Sugarcoat, an upscale nail & beauty salon, will soon open its fourth Atlanta area location. Joining existing locations in Buckhead at the Eclipse condo building, Vinings at Vinings Jubilee, and Virginia Highland, the new Sugarcoat will open on Roswell Road in the Roswell Wieuca shopping center in north Buckhead. The new location will open beside Goldberg's Bagel Co. & Deli in a space most recently occupied by Goldberg's Group's corporate office.  Goldberg's Group has since relocated to a larger facility in Marietta near Dobbins Air Reserve Base.

Kale Me Crazy plans to open their ninth Atlanta area location tomorrow at the Avenue East Cobb.  In celebration of the opening, the East Cobb shop will offer free smoothies from 4pm til 8pm.

Need more Cinebistro and less Studio Movie Grill with their awful office chair seats.

Your Pie is opening in Milton

The Studio Movie Grill will fail in that location. Regardless, Cinebistro is better.

I think Cook Out needs to slow down on the expansion.

What's up with Bachrach? I used to love it, but opening then closing then opening and closing again is not a good sign. Maybe it's the price point?

Love that Studio Movie Grill is opening up. It's a great location, seeing it's gonna be at a NW Expressway exit.

Bojangles is also finally building on Turner Hill Rd in Lithonia. Also, Burlington Coat Factory is opening in the former Best Buy location on Turner Hill in Lithonia.

Studio Movie Grill is a good re-use of that big space and a needed option in the area. However, while that center is well-maintained, it's literally hidden from both Roswell Rd and Powers Ferry and it looks more like a vacant warehouse from i-75. Suggestion to SMG management: install clearly identifiable neon signage at the surface streets to alert neighborhood motorists that you exist and, more importantly, put big, unambiguous signage on the back of your building toward I-75 to notify the thousands of daily interstate commuters who already pass unwittingly within feet of that property.

The Harry's is closing, so not sure how the cinema will attract needed patrons in that secluded local. Now, say a developer bought the entire property, added some apartments, retail & restaurants, the cinema might work well. But new development is avoiding most of Cobb
, so I must agree, this will struggle to attract customers.

Cinebistro is better."

Movies have become pricey night out and not everybody wants to pay Cinebistro prices just to catch a flick. SMG will do well here IMO.

I prefer the SMG format. I like the option of ordering during the movie if need be. I have never found that to be distracting at the Alpharetta location - they do a pretty good job of quietly taking and fill orders.
