Bits & Bites [Atlanta Commercial Real Estate News]

Atlanta's Farm Burger celebrated the grand opening of its newest restaurant in Memphis yesterday, its first in the River City.  The restaurant is located in "Crosstown Concourse," which like Ponce City Market in Atlanta is a former Sears distribution center given a new lease on life.  The first Farm Burger opened in Decatur in 2010.  Since then the mini-chain has added local restaurants in Buckhead and Dunwoody as well as grown out of state more recently.  The first out-of-state Farm Burger opened in downtown Asheville, North Carolina in 2013.

In the years since, new locations have been added to Berkeley and Marin, near San Francisco, California, Huntsville, Alabama, Nashville, Tennessee and a second location in Asheville.  A new Farm Burger is expected to open in Birmingham, Alabama in early September according to Farm Burger owner and founder George Frangos.  Another location, planned for Grant Park at the new The George residential development on Memorial Drive, is expected to open later this fall.  Peachtree Corners Town Center, the new Fuqua Development in Peachtree Corners, is also expected to welcome a Farm Burger restaurant, but with construction having not yet started, don't expect to see the restaurant open before next fall.  A satellite "limited" location is also expected to open later this month at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta.  The location is limited in the sense that it will only offer a couple of burger and fry options, not the full Farm Burger menu.

The owners of The Nook have leased the former Gold Star Bakery & Cafe/Quattro/ParQ space next to Willy's Mexicana Grill at 1071 Piedmont Avenue, adjacent to Piedmont Park.  I inquired with The Nook's ownership about two weeks ago with regards to what their plans are for the space and have yet to hear back.  Perhaps the new restaurant will be called "The Cranny."  The original The Nook opened at nearby 1144 Piedmont Avenue in early 2009. There had been plans for a second The Nook to open at Parkview on Peachtree, the new mixed-use development in Chamblee, but those plans have since been abandoned.

Sources say that Macy's will soon begin a "limited remodel" of their store at Northlake Mall in Tucker.  It's unclear how much the company is investing in the interior remodel or what all it will include, but the fact that the retailer is investing in its Northlake Mall store is surely a welcome sign for those in the Tucker area who feared the store might close. Overall, the Northlake Mall Macy's store is 161,000 square feet over three floors and will welcome a new Macy's Backstage store, the retailer's new outlet concept on August 19.

Burger King is expected to soon begin renovation of their existing restaurant at 1190 Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw. The roughly 2,900 square foot restaurant is anticipated to be closed during the remodel.

A new independent jewelry store called Highland Diamond has opened on Highland Avenue across from Alon's in Morningside.  The jewelry store opened in place of the former Boutique Karma, and adjacent to Highland Runner.  Highland Diamond joins The Wish List, a home furnishings  and decor boutique, that opened in late 2015 as independent retailers in the area.

A new eatery called Juicy Drop has opened on E. Ponce de Leon Avenue in downtown Decatur.  The shop offers assorted cold pressed juices, smoothies, salads and poke.

Pita Mediterranean Street Food just opened their newest location at Peachtree Square North in Peachtree Corners and has in the pipeline eleven more stores in Georgia and its first out-of-state locations in Auburn, Alabama and Greenville, South Carolina.  In the coming months, new Pita locations are planned for Azure on the Park on Piedmont Avenue in midtown as well as The Crossings, a Kroger anchored shopping center on South Cobb Drive in Smyrna. Other Atlanta area Pita restaurants are planned for Johns Creek, Marietta Square, The Avenue West Cobb, Alpharetta, Halcyon in Forsyth, Covington, LaGrange and Warner Robins.

Gekko Sushi and Lounge in the former Repast at Glen Iris and North Avenue near Ponce City Market has closed. Local sources indicate the restaurant closed over the weekend and was quietly moving stuff out of the restaurant earlier this week.  The restaurant had been offered for sale by The Shumacher Group, a local real estate brokerage, for a few months.  The restaurant is still available, but is now for lease, rather than for sale, according to Steve Josovitz, the broker with The Shumacher Group, handling the restaurant's listing. The current lease on the 3,200 square foot building is $10,000 per month and now includes all furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E).

Last month Regency Centers quietly renamed Marietta's Delk Spectrum shopping center Sope Creek Crossing.  The 98,675 square foot shopping center is located near the intersection of Delk and Powers Ferry Roads and is anchored by a 45,044 square foot Publix.

Dick's Sporting Goods and Field & Stream will celebrate their Grand Re-Opening in Kennesaw this weekend. The stores, which ToNeTo Atlanta first reported on this past November, are both owned by Dick's Sporting Goods. The Dick's store, a former Galyan's, was already open in the center and was joined by its sibling store, Field & Stream, in an adjacent space, formerly home to a JCPenney Home Store.  Opening events at the stores this weekend will include gift card giveaways, promotional item giveaways and appearances from former Atlanta Braves players Ryan Klesko and Hall of Famer Phil Niekro, as well as former Atlanta Falcon Roddy White, among others.

Goodwill of North Georgia will open their 60th overall store and donation center in Tyrone on Thursday August 31st.  The store is located at 130 Saint Stephens Court. Tyrone is located southwest of Atlanta, just north of Peachtree City off I-85.
