[CLOSURE ALERT] Ingles to Shutter Two Georgia Stores

Ingles confirmed earlier this week that it plans to close two Georgia stores by the end of the month.  The stores, both located in Lawrenceville,  are due to close permanently as of April 26.  One store is located at 1050 Grayson Highway and according to real estate resources, is 62,500 square feet and originally opened in 1986.  The other store, at 1154 Lawrenceville Highway, is about 78,000 square feet and opened in 2002, according to real estate resources.  The Lawrenceville Highway store featured a fuel center, unlike the Grayson Highway store.  The Grayson Highway store, however, is owned by Ingles, according to property records.  No immediate plans for the soon to be vacant stores have been made public.
Typical Ingles store

Following the two closures, the Asheville, North Carolina-based grocer will operate 67 stores  in Georgia, making the Peach State their number one market by store count.  The grocer's home state of North Carolina is home to 64 stores.  In total, the grocer operates 188 stores, including 35 in South Carolina, 20 in Tennessee and one each Alabama and Virginia.

The grocery chain continues to operate dozens of locations in Georgia including stores in Cartersville, Carrollton, Covington, Cumming, Dacula, Dawsonville, Douslasville, Fayetteville, Peachtree Corners, Lilburn, Loganville and Stone Mountain, among others.

In years past, Ingles has closed at least five other stores in the greater metro Atlanta area:

3530 Highway 20 SE in Conyers which is now a Food Depot

2546 Powder Springs Road in Austell which was demolished
4400 Hugh Howell Road in Tucker which is now partially occupied by a Goodwill store
2700 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road in Suwanee which is now a Super H Mart
10010 Highway 92 in Woodstock which is now a Stars & Strikes, a bowling facility

Are you surprised that Ingles has decided to close its two Lawrenceville stores?  Where do you do most of your grocery shopping?  What would you like to see open in place of the two soon to be shuttered stores?

I visit their Peachtree Corners store from time to time. It is a clean, well run, well stocked store. I prefer it over Publix and Kroger.

Can't say I'm surprised. I find them to be more expensive then any other store in the area. They also never have anybody working in the departments and even during peak time,I've never seen more than five or six customers in the store. I'm surprised they have as many as they do in the area.

Just wanted to note that the Ingles in Conyers didn't close altogether, they just moved across the street to a newer shopping center.

Not surprised Ingles also closed one in Snellville in 2014.I hope they relocate all the workers from the closed stores they did not do that for us at Snellville.I went to Publix and wish I had done it a long time ago.

Ah, the melancholy. Coming back to the ATL area and remembering these 2 specific stores. #Sadpanda

This surprises me greatly...the peachtree corners Ingles is fantastic! Great product selection, extra neat and clean, nice friendly workers, and good sale prices. Never shop anywhere else.

Do yourself a favor and check them out.

In8le’s is a great little store! Great shorter shelves and big flat shopping carts. The doughnuts are good and so is their bread and chicken. In8le’s is a great little shopping place! Mmmhmmmmm!!

They’re clearly retreating from the metro area. The competition here is too strong and they’re likely more suited to being a small town grocer providing a nicer alternative to Walmart. I’m surprised their Peachtree Corners location is surviving.

@ 4/21: no they are not retreating! dont spread nonsensebfool. They are awesome, and clearly better than publix or kroger... wishing ingles continued success...signed, an ingles family!

ATL has horrible grocery options. Many smaller southern metros have much better grocers than ATL. Maybe it's the demographics but Raleigh (Triangle) is getting Wegman's in addition to the more options than ATL has. Ingle's needs to expand not leave ATL!

This was posted on the 17th and nobody has suggested a Trader Joe's yet?

Trader Joe's or Whole Foods?

Most of Ingle's Markets' store closings in recent years have been Ingle's stores in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Supermarkets Publix and Kroger and hypermarket Walmart Supercenter are dominant.

Trader Joe's or Whole Foods would be nice or HOMEStore.
