[CLOSURE ALERT] Chicken and the Egg Closed in Marietta

Chicken and the Egg on Whitlock Avenue in Marietta has closed. The restaurant, which chef Marc Taft opened August 2011, closed earlier this week. The restaurant occupied a 8,550 square foot space in the Burnt Hickory Village shopping center at 800 Whitlock Avenue.  Chicken and the Egg is the third Taft concept to close in recent months following the December 2018 closure of FEED Fried Chicken + Such at The Battery Atlanta and the May 2019 closure of Brine Seafood Shack at Avalon in Alpharetta.

Marc Taft provided ToNeTo Atlanta the following statement regarding the closure:

“It is with a heavy heart that after 8 years of serving Marietta and beyond, Chicken and the Egg is closing. This restaurant was a dream recognized for me. It will always be special to me and my family. I’d like to thank the thousands of guests that graced our doors, the team that became a family and helped take care of our guests, and the vendors that supported us until the end. All of those people helped prove a chef driven restaurant could not only survive OTP, but also garner a following across the Southeast.  We will help our team find new homes over the next week or so and then wrap up this chapter of our lives. We hope that maybe one day Chicken and the Egg will be reborn.”

Although Taft did not mention it specifically, it's likely Chicken and the Egg's closure was related to the Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing of MTF Restaurant Group, of which the Marietta restaurant was reportedly not a part, but likely still closely tied to.

It was confirmed months ago that a previously planned FEED in Fuqua Development's Peachtree Corners Town Center was no longer happening.

When asked about the status of his planned Halcyon restaurant(s) in south Forsyth and several planned restaurants at CityCentre and MidCity in Huntsville, Taft responded that neither are happening.

If you own or manage a restaurant in the Marietta area, we urge you to help find jobs for the many employees affected by this abrupt closure.

Will you miss Chicken and the Egg in Marietta? What would you like to see open in place of Chicken and the Egg?  What is your favorite Marietta area restaurant?

I walked in once but did not stay. It was empty and cavernous. Some like cavernous eateries. I do not. I wish everyone there the best and hope they find employment soon. Loco Willy's in the same plaza is a good spot for food and a beer and occasionally live music. My favorite restaurant? That's extremely difficult to say since there are so many to choose from. Let's say we eat at Fish Thyme in Acworth when we want the best without driving downtown.

We stopped going a long time ago. I think they just got too big for their britches. There was attitude at the hostess stand every week we went. The servers we had were either very rude or lacked knowledge on the menu or being an employable human being and you’d better not complain about anything because, trust me, you’d never be right. It was same thing, different day for way too long.

I WORKED AT CHICKEN AND THE EGG FOR FIVE YEARS AND HAVE WORKED IN THE INDUSTRY FOR OVER 40 YEARS. I KNOW OF NO OTHER RESTAURANT OWNER WHO DESERVES TO LOSE EVERYTHING AS MARK TAFT DOES. HIS EGO IS FRONT AND CENTER IN HOW HE HAS ALWAYS TREATED STAFF AND GUEST. HIS GOING OUT OF BUSINESS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE DAYS IN OVER 4 YEARS.

My family tried to go there for breakfast but it wasn't a breakfast restaurant. We knew nothing about the place before we noticed their sign, but it was poorly named. Anything with "egg" in the name suggests breakfast to me.
