[UPDATE] Wegmans Responds to Reported Store

We reported Monday that popular grocery store Wegmans had an LOI (letter of intent) in place for a proposed new store at Perimeter Pointe in Sandy Springs. This information was brought to us by a well respected and reliable Atlanta area real estate professional.  While it’s not uncommon for retailers, restaurants, hotels and other businesses to deny potential, or even confirmed plans they may have before they want the information out, a representative for Wegmans tells us that there is "no truth" to the “rumored” site we referenced, nor are there any plans to enter Georgia at this time.
We never want to mislead, intentionally or not, or be misled ourselves.  In the ten plus years we have been reporting on Atlanta area real estate news, we have learned that deals, leases and other transactions can go from planned, to shelved, to dead in the blink of an eye. That being said, and given the reluctance of the Wegmans rep to clearly state whether or not a Georgia expansion is on the table, we stand by our report.

The Perimeter Pointe redevelopment has been in the works for several years, and it’s unlikely that things will happen quickly.

Wegmans recent entry into the Raleigh market and reported interest in the Charlotte market give us reason to believe that where there is smoke, there is fire.

We appreciate your continued readership.

Thanks for the update and for the website

Perhaps the original post should have said…

“A Wegman’s spokesperson was unavailable for comment…”

or

"When contacted about the story, Wegman's had no comment…"

Grocery stores is serious business

Aw, man. I really, really hope you were right the first time. I just relocated to ATL from a Wegman's area and can confirm that there's a reason they have cult status. Whole Foods without the WF price.

That is a ridiculous comment. Eli is the best of the best and like he said retailers will deny deny deny.

What do readers think of this retraction? Will you continue to read this blog? What are your favorite articles about grocery stores?

No, they actually said "There is no truth to that rumor"

Clearly Wegmans is at a strategic place; LOI means they are yet not fully locked in and still in negotiation; New greenwise rising in the neighborhood; large Kroger, Publix, and Walmart within x miles in the neighborhood; others may be in contention for the same space; OF COURSE they will deny.... their leak to this reliable source may have been intentional also. I know inherently that Eli and his source are reliable. The landlord, the leasing agent, the bank, the Wegmans team, the other retailers, the other grocers - they are all playing poker and CHESS

It's been reported by other businesses that Sandy Springs Permitting process has become one of the worst in the country and businesses such as Chick-Fil-A, and others, have reported they will not attempt to open another location in Sandy Springs due to the no common sense practices in the permitting process as compared nationwide to other experiences. The GA Builders Association has/is experiencing similar issues, so I've been told. This could be the downfall, even if Wegmans is attempting to open the location. I don't have any factual information on this. Just my opinion of some conversations I've been privy to.

I think it would do well in that location.
An LOI just means that the parties have agreed to the basic terms of a deal.
There is still a long lease negotiation and a due diligence/permitting period before a site will come to life.

The actual negotiations can take years.
Regarding Sandy Springs Permitting, we will welcome Wegmans in. Brookhaven or Chamblee. Chamblee Plaza is RIPE for Wegmans.

Amen to Chamblee Plaza...we need something that sets us apart from the OTP burbs.

The permitting process in Brookhaven is just as bad if not worse. If a variance or rezoning would be needed that would never pass in wonderful Brookhaven. The anti everything extremists would not allow anything that would require trees to be cut down.Bike lanes, sidewalks to nowhere and the illustrious famous "Pocket Parks are the only things acceptable in leftist infested Brookhaven.

Wegmans is a wonderful store unfortunately who have the reputation of being more expensive than others. This is not true lol ! I’ve done my research trust me and while you may spend more when you shop there because they have amazing stuff:) if you stick to your list you will be surprised. Anyone who is lucky enough to get a Wegmans should be doing the happy dance 😊😘♥️

They're going 5 stores near Raleigh. 1 in Harrison, NY, another near Washington DC, 1 in Middletown, NJ. Sorry GA you're not on their radar at all, yet. Maybe in a decade.

Wegman's or not, I'm not driving through all that traffic to Perimeter Pointe for groceries!!

Wegman ... East Cobb is wide open! Open in the old Kmart building near the big chicken.

Love you Eli!

Just the responses to these two stories clearly indicate the demand for it. I've been to several on my travels to the Northeast and seek them out for lunch and dinner while on the road. Grocery business in Atlanta is competitive with new players like Aldi and Lidl taking market share on the discount end (but with very good private label goods). Having Wegman's enter the mix would definitely take market share on the high end from Whole Foods and Publix.

Welcome to Atlanta. Lol. It might be news to you, but Metro Atlanta is predominantly Liberal. So what backwards, conservative, hell hole of a county you hail from/call home? SMH

Sorry wrong post to respond to. Not directed at you.

Absolutely, I’ll continue to read.

Wegman's will eventually come to Georgia and the Atlanta area. When they do, all I can say is that even the best Publix and Whole Foods will not be able to compete. Once you are a Wegman's shopper, there is no going back.

They’re absolutely exploring Atlanta. Publix entering VA and movement all along the Eastern seaboard makes sense. With that said, there are logistical and human resource challenges that go way beyond the physical location. This will take time.
