[EXCLUSIVE] HomeGoods Taking a Time Out in Tucker

HomeGoods will later this September close their store in Cofer Crossing shopping center in Tucker.  The store, a division of Framingham, Massachusetts-based TJX Cos., opened at the center in early 2011.  The 27,450 square foot store was originally opened as a Goody's with the rest of the Kroger / Walmart-anchored power center in early 1999.   The space was later reopened as an AJWright, a failed store concept from TJX.

The Tucker HomeGoods was one of three that the company opened in April 2011.  The other two, those at East-West Commons in Austell and at Stonecrest Marketplace in Lithonia, both previously closed.

HomeGoods has in recent years added several new Atlanta area locations including those at Powers Ferry Square in North Buckhead, The District at Howell Mill in West Midtown, and Chamblee Plaza in Chamblee, among others.

Sources close to the housewares retailer and those in the real estate community tell ToNeTo Atlanta that HomeGoods is "close" to securing a new space in Tucker that would open in 2021.  The new space is believed to be slightly smaller than the current store, but could open paired with another TJX Cos. brand.

A new franchise of Planet Fitness will open in the current HomeGoods once the store closes.  Hampton, New Hampshire-based Planet Fitness recently celebrated the opening of its 2000th location, and today operates about 70 clubs in Georgia including one at Embry Village shopping center, a few miles away from Cofer Crossing.  Known for their "Judgement Free Zone," the new Cofer Crossing Planet Fitness would likely open by early 2021.

Are you excited for the opening of Planet Fitness at Cofer Crossing in Tucker?  Where would you like to see HomeGoods reopen in Tucker?  What other stores would you like to see open in Tucker?

Please share your thoughts below.

Due to health and vanity reasons, fitness centers are generally welcomed. But, because fitness centers are plotted everywhere nowadays, I'm not personally "excited" about Planet Fitness' pending opening at Cofer Crossing in Tucker. On the other hand, another Whole Foods or The Container Store opening in Tucker would thrill me. -- JodyTucker.com | January 31, 2020

I go to Planet Fitness in Embry Hills. This will be about the same distance away (.9 miles closer). However, when the new expanded Kroger with Fuel Center opens at Embry Hills, I will probably choose to stay there for the better store next door.

Dang! Guess I'll have to go down to Decatur and hit up the HomeGoods down there until the new one opens in Tucker closer to me. Oh well.

Where could a new HomeGoods go in Tucker? Is someone finally going to do something with the Movie Tavern/Toys R Us Plaza on LaVista?

@JodyTucker - I mean this in the nicest possible way, but there is zero chance of a Container Store coming to Tucker. And I'd say pretty close to zero chance of a Whole Foods. Just can't see either of them happening based on demographics. I mean WF closed the Briarcliff Store in Druid Hills. If that one needed to be 'replaced' by the midtown store, there's no hope for Tucker.

Milfs dont shop in Tucker.

It would be great to see that huge depressing Movie Tavern plaza revitalized or parts of Northlake Mall torn down and reconfigured. The Northlake side of Tucker isn't territory for a new Whole Foods. Maybe a Lidl could go in somewhere. The best we could hope for is a new modern Kroger to replace the terrible one on Lavista by Red Lobster. I just moved to the area and will travel to Toco Hills and will try the remodeled Embry Hills one when it is done before going to the Northlake store if a need to do Kroger. Publix is better anyway.

Terrible news! Having Home Goods in Tucker has been such a blessing. Love the selection and price. And a nice, roomy store, unlike the Decatur store. Much easier to shop in Tucker store. Hope a new Home Goods opens SOON in Tucker!

Anything else but a planet fitness there getting to be like the Dollar stores

Sorry to hear. They appear to do very well in that location. Can’t imagine how they could go to a smaller space.

Hmmmm... Maybe Office Depot closes at Briarcliff Village and Home Goods sets up shop next to TJMaxx? As for the mess that is the Northlake Festival (Petsmart) center, there is nothing that's going to happen until the radio antenna lease is up. The leases on that antenna pay more than anything else. Any ideas that might involve the upcoming redevelopment of space at Northlake Mall?

I'm truly disappointed to hear this news! This particular HG store has been one of my favorite spots ever since it opened, and it's so convenient. I plan my food shopping & trips to the pharmacy around my visits to Home Goods. If only they could put Planet Fitness somewhere else!!!

I've noticed a lot of transients in the area.

Announcing in January that you’re closing in September seems really early.

I live less than a 1/2mile from Home Goods! I loooove the store. However,I would definitely prefer a Planet fitness,it would help keep me motivated to workout being so close.I could walk there and Back..YAAAAY

I dont think its good for the small parking area. Juicy krab, kroger, and walmart has constant customers throughout its operating hours. I can only imagine the traffic getting in and out especially during holidays.

U are so right!!!

I'm more concerned with parking and that had station. Gyms are great but it's already getting crowded. Anyone know if the gas station will turn over to someone less awkward?

No it wasn't in Druid Hills, which is south of Emory University, and borders on Morningside, Va-Highland, Lake Claire and City of Decatur. That store was in North Druid Hills, which is generally north of Emory University.

Of the surrounding shopping centers with large vacant spaces, this one is the best positioned to land a good tenant. The LA Fitness at Northlake is overcrowded and needs a competitor. Northlake Festival is a disaster for visibility, flow, and parking. The Kroger and Walmart will keep any other grocer away. Local market is over-saturated and my guess is that one of the 2 older Krogers in Tucker will close after Embry Hills re-opens (I'd bet on the Red Lobster Kroger on Lavista), leaving yet another large disused space.

There has been some activity at the former Sports Authority by Bambinellis.
Could that be the new Home Goods?
