Local restaurateur Gary Lin plans to bring authentic Szechuan cuisine to Marietta. Later this month Lin plans to open Wei at 35 South Marietta Parkway, not far from the Marietta Square. The new restaurant replaces Pier 213 Seafood which closed this past December after about seven years in business. Wei is the fourth in a series of similar restaurants from Lin in metro Atlanta.
Lin, who has taken a step back from both cooking and operating his restaurants, made the change in response to changes in tastes and preferences among diners in the area. The new restaurant, which Lin describes as traditional Szechuan, will be similar in some ways to his Hai Chinese in Suburban Plaza near Decatur and also his Urban Wu in Piedmont Peachtree Crossing in Buckhead. The one key difference, Lin says, is that Wei will feature several clay pot dishes.
Lin first considered converting his Smoke + Duck Sauce eatery on Powers Ferry Road into a different concept, but decided instead to sell it to Andy and Mike Tjia, owners of HOKI Sushi, who plan to open Hikaru Ramen Noodle Bar in its place. Wei is in a way a replacement restaurant for what he had planned in place of Smoke + Duck Sauce. Lin tells ToNeTo Atlanta that despite having now closed both Smoke + Duck Sauce locations, he may reopen the Asian barbecue concept down the road in another part of town.
Chef Wei, who will helm the kitchen at his namesake restaurant, was brought to Atlanta from Chicago by Lin specifically to open the new restaurant. Work is well underway and Lin hopes to be open by the end of March. Wei will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.
