The owners of El Azteca have signed a lease to open their fourth location later this fall. The new El Azteca is slated to open in September at Perimeter Town Center in Sandy Springs. In the development, El Azteca will backfill original tenant Uncle Julio's which closed last spring as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on restaurants. The two level restaurant space includes patio seating on both floors and spans 10,763 square feet.
After months of silence and speculation, the owners of Cherokee Cattle Co. in Marietta have finally shed new light on their planned reopening complete with a short video showing work already underway. In the video, posted Wednesday to the restaurant's official facebook page, chef/owner Gus Tselios says renovations are "gonna take a little time as everything, because if you're gonna do it right, it takes a little time." Tselios, calling Cherokee Cattle Company "our favorite restaurant," also ends the video by announcing a new name: Cherokee Steak and BBQ.
We are pleased to share that after permanently closing the Davio's Northern Italian Steakhouse at Phipps Plaza in Buckhead, owner Steve DiFillippo and Simon Properties have come to an agreement to reopen the restaurant! Renovations, which according to permits filed with the city of Atlanta will total an estimated $250,000, will begin soon with the hope being that the restaurant can reopen later this fall, according to a source familiar with the restaurant's plans. Davio's at Phipps Plaza first opened in 2010.
A growing bagel business is entering East Cobb. 101 Bagel Cafe has secured the onetime Baskin-Robbins at 4811 Lower Roswell Road for its latest location. The new bagel shop will open alongside My Emergency Dental (previously Sage Dental) and Papa John's in a freestanding building near the corner of Lower Roswell and Johnson Ferry Roads. Longtime residents (and ToNeTo Atlanta readers) will recall that the building all three businesses occupy was previously a Blockbuster Video.
Mediterranean fast casual eatery Cava will open the first of fourteen planned Atlanta area locations June 25 in Chastain Park. The restaurant, located in Tuxedo Festival (3655 Roswell Road) in what it is officially referring to as its "North Buckhead" outpost, like the rest of the locations the company is planning for Atlanta, replaces an existing Zoës Kitchen.
Despite the headwinds facing many retailers, grocers seem to be among the most active in metro Atlanta with an immediate pipeline of nearly 30 new stores. The main players involved in the upcoming openings are Publix and Lidl, which together account for at least 24 new stores.
Cobb County property documents indicate that a new Aldi grocery store is coming to Cobb Parkway in Marietta. The new store will be constructed at 249 South Cobb Parkway, adjacent to a new-look Krystal restaurant and across the street from the Marietta Diner. Demolition of the existing structure - previously home to Houston Brothers Inc. - is already underway.
Shane's Rib Shack at Perimeter Place in Dunwoody has closed. The restaurant, which opened with the center in 2006, occupied a high visibility location along Perimeter Center West in the Super Target-anchored center. Specifically, Shane's was situated in a 2,600 square foot space between Chipotle and the former Your Pie which previously closed.

Longstanding Buckhead restaurant McKinnon's Louisiane has been sold. According to a recently released sales flyer from Steve Josovitz of The Shumacher Group, Inc., Josovitz represented the seller in the transaction which closed Friday afternoon. McKinnon's is located at 3209 Maple Drive, just off Peachtree Road, in the heart of Buckhead. When contacted for comment, Josovitz indicated that the terms of the sale prevented him from disclosing the new owner but he did say that the new concept will be an "upscale restaurant, bar and lounge."
Atlantans will soon have two places to enjoy "tacos without borders." A second metro area Velvet Taco is currently slated to open Monday, June 14 in West Midtown. The new 2,659 square foot restaurant will open near the corner of 14th Street and Howell Mill Road in the lobby level of the new mixed-use project The Interlock. The new restaurant is slightly larger than the chain's original Atlanta location which opened along West Paces Ferry Road at Buckhead Market Place in September 2019.
