[EXCLUSIVE] Market by Macy's to Backfill Atlanta Area Stein Mart

Macy's plans to open a third Market by Macy's concept store in metro Atlanta.  On the heels of last fall's openings in Snellville and McDonough, a new Market by Macy's will join Johns Creek Town Center in Suwanee.  Macy's joins existing anchors Kohl's, Sprout's Farmers Market, Michael's and Lowe's in the power center at the corner of McGinnis Ferry and Medlock Bridge Roads (SR 141).

The new Market by Macy's will open in place of the 31,000 square foot former Stein Mart, a space that has sat largely vacant since 2020 when the Jacksonville, Florida-based company filed for bankruptcy and subsequently closed all of its stores. [ToNeTo Atlanta reported January 17 that Marshalls will relocate its existing East Cobb area store to most of the former Stein Mart in Merchants Walk.]

Market by Macy's stores are typically 31,000 to 58,000 square feet and offer “an even more curated assortment of Macy’s branded fashion” than the traditional mall stores provide.  In reality, the Market by Macy's concept is essentially a mini-Macy's with merchandise tailored to the local market.  It's worth noting that Market by Macy's is not the same as Macy's Backstage, which unlike the former, is an off-price division located primarily within standard Macy's including ten in metro Atlanta.

The existing Atlanta area Market by Macy's stores in Snellville, (31,630 square feet) and McDonough, (58,000 square feet), replaced former Office Depot and Toys "R" Us stores, respectively.

In Suwanee, where Market by Macy's is replacing what was most recently a Stein Mart, the space was before that a Borders, but opened in 2000 as part of a larger Kmart box.

As a company, Macy's has been shrinking its overall footprint as it closes aging and underperforming stores.  In metro Atlanta, recent closures of standard Macy's stores include those at North DeKalb Mall near Decatur, Greenbriar Mall in Atlanta, The Gallery at South DeKalb in Decatur, Georgia Square Mall in Athens and Macon Mall in Macon.

Despite the closures, Macy's continues to operate several full-line, mall-based stores in metro Atlanta including those in Northlake Mall in Tucker, Lenox Square in Buckhead, Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody, Cumberland Mall near Smyrna, Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth, Mall of Georgia in Buford, and North Point Mall in Alpharetta, among others.

The new Market by Macy's in Suwanee marks just the sixth overall for the concept first launched in Texas in 2020.  In addition to the two existing stores in Georgia, there are Market by Macy's stores in South Lake, Fort Worth, and Flower Mound, Texas.

Have you ever been to a Market by Macy's?  Kmart, Borders, Stein Mart or Macy's, what tenant do you think best fits the neighborhood?  What other types of businesses would you like to see open in Suwanee?

It's a very nice looking concept. Upscale like Saks 5th Off stores, not sure about where the 2 ATL locations are and their ability to make in those locations.

Concern over crime, traffic and Covid are keeping people closer to home. There is a lot of disposable income in the "burbs" so it makes sense that Macy's would respond. Now, long term do the current changes in behavior last or do people return to the traditional shopping habits - we'll see.
