Bits & Bites

Roberto “Beto” Correa is bringing his Mexican eatery Beto's Tacos to Buckhead.  The new outpost will open in place of the former Moe's Southwest Grill on the third floor of Phipps Plaza.  Beto's is most well known for their authentic Mexican street tacos, but the eatery also features a variety of "tortas," Mexican street sandwiches, nachos, plates, salads, burritos and soups, among other options.  Correa opened his first Beto's on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road in Suwanee May 28, 2019.  A second location opened on Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville in March 2021.  Correa debuted a third location August 24 on McGinnis Ferry Road in Johns Creek.

A new location of salad eatery Chopt is planned for Brookhaven.  The new Chopt is planned for a roughly 2,600 square foot space in Brookhaven Station, in the 4000 block of Peachtree Road across from the Brookhaven MARTA station.  The new Chopt joins existing locations of Mellow Mushroom and Wingstop and upcoming locations of Chick-fil-A and Fox Brothers Bar-B-Q.  The new salad shop replaces the short-lived Rapz wraps and smoothie bar and Nail City, which relocated to a different space within the center.  New York City-based Chopt entered the Atlanta market in late 2018 and currently operates four locations in the market: Buckhead, Toco Hills, Midtown and Dunwoody with new locations coming soon to East Cobb and Kennesaw.

Beard Papa's, an eatery specializing in Japanese cream puffs, will celebrate the grand opening of its newest Atlanta area location this coming Saturday, September 17 at 3350 Steve Reynolds Boulevard, Suite 103, in Duluth.  The new outpost is the third in metro Atlanta for the Japanese chain joining existing locations in Peachtree Corners and Sandy Springs.  There was previously a Beard Papa's planned for the The Exchange at Gwinnett in Buford, but those plans have seemingly been called off.

Taco Mac will open its latest Atlanta area location Thursday September 15 in Gainesville.  The new restaurant is located at 1979 Jesse Jewell Parkway in City Mill Market and marks the Atlanta-based chain's 28th location across Georgia and Tennessee.

On Wednesday, September 14, from 6:00-9:00 p.m., Les Dames d'Escoffier International's Atlanta Chapter invites 100 guests to enjoy its first Bourbon Bites event at By George restaurant located in the historic Candler Hotel at 127 Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta.  Guests will sip on an expertly curated selection of bourbons including some that never leave the distillery.  In addition, guests will enjoy Tito’s Vodka and Benzinger wines all paired with delicious foods from Julio Catillo-Aviles, By George's new chef.   Les Dames d‘Escoffier International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women involved in the culinary and beverage arts and surrounding industries, including hospitality and agriculture, in the form of scholarships and grants. Funds garnered by its annual Bourbon & Bites event go directly to these efforts.  Tickets, including the bourbon tastings, wines, Tito’s vodka, and bites from By George, are $225 per person and are available here.

Breakfast concept Biscuit Belly, which in October 2021 announced plans to open their first Atlanta area location in March 2022, officially opened Tuesday September 6.  Located at 3330 Cobb Parkway NW in Acworth, the new restaurant occupies a new 2,700 square foot space in the Kroger-anchored Butler Creek Plaza.   The new location is the sixth overall for the Louisville-based chain which has existing locations in Louisville and southern Indiana.  Franchisees of the fast-casual restaurant plan to open as many as four other units in Georgia.  Subsequent openings are also planned for Marietta and Woodstock, as well as Newnan and Columbus.  Missy Moon and Robert Estapa with Fresh Development One LLC will operate the Georgia Biscuit Belly locations. The pair previously operated several franchise restaurant concepts including Newk’s Eatery and Quiznos.  Other Biscuit Belly restaurants are also planned for Nashville.

BrewDog is slated to open their first Atlanta area location by the end of September at The Stove Works building (112 Krog Street) along the BeltLine Eastside Trail.  The international brewery and pub chain based in Scotland is growing its American presence with the Atlanta outpost, one of several the company has opened or will soon open.  The Atlanta BrewDog spans more than 12,000 square feet and includes a brewery and a restaurant.

Chicken Salad Chick will officially open its latest Atlanta area location Wednesday September 21 in Fayetteville.  The new outpost, the Atlanta-based chain's 39th in Georgia, is located at 1175 N. Glynn Street, Suite C.  The restaurant will celebrate its grand opening on Wednesday by rewarding the first 100 guests with free chicken salad for a year!  The first 100 guests to arrive to the new Fayetteville location and purchase "The Chick" will receive one free large "Quick Chick" every month for 12 months.  From this initial group, one lucky guest will also be randomly selected to receive one free large Quick Chick every week for 52 weeks.

Corndogs by Mr. Cow will be opening their third Atlanta area location later this year at Cumberland Mall near Smyrna.  The Hawaii-born and now Suwanee-based business has existing Atlanta area locations in Morrow within Nam Dae Mun Farmers Market and in Lawrenceville within Sugarloaf Mills. The eatery specializes in Korean corndogs which are "made from either sausage, mozzarella cheese, or a combination of the two. This is skewered and coated in a sweet flour batter before rolled in a layer of toppings."

PONKO Chicken has closed its outpost in Chastain Square in Chastain Park.  The franchise opened in October 2019 and closed as of August 28, according to a notice on the restaurant's front door.  The 1,200 square foot space has reportedly already been leased to a new restaurant.  Following the Chastain closure, there are still eight PONKO locations in Georgia including one in the Lenox Square food court in Buckhead and another along Chamblee Tucker Road, just off I-85.

Taco Mac has gone so downhill it's ridiculous and embarrassing. Once great wings and burgers are now awful. Last straw for me was the absolute worst fish n chips I've ever had. Literally 95% fty batter, awful. Service is also terrible. Really sad. Used to be a great place for a bite and a game.

Are the Fox Brothers and Chick Fil A in Brookhaven ever going to open? I feel like the Fox Brothers especially was announced over a year ago and should be open by now, but I haven't even seen any construction start.

There has been some work hollowing out the space for Chick-fil-A, and the relocation and internal demolition of Nail City for the Chopt space. I perceive both of those as landlord initiated movements. I can’t really tell if there was or was not any movement on the Fox Bros. space.

I think we can have confidence that Chick-fil-A (assuming the least came to fruition as we think it did), regardless of when Chick-fil-A is scheduled to begin work, nevertheless Chick-fil-A is on a very strict construction schedule and will pinpoint start on a certain date according to the preplanned scheduled construction partners.

Having been witness as many are to the parking lot and drive through nightmares that are every single Chick-fil-A including the scrape and replace locations that are drive-through centric such as Chamblee, it continues to amaze me that they’ve chosen to depart from the current drive-through strategy and deploy a new location that has no drive-through whatsoever, and yet also having the challenge of the worst parking situation in the entire area. There is a Chick-fil-A on Peachtree at Piedmont in one of the towers that obviously has no drive-through and the patronage is extremely low and limited to the weekday lunchtime and breakfast shifts to serve local workers within walking distance.

With great sincerity, the only pedestrain foot traffic I see around the Brookhaven station is a couple of joggers every now and then on Peachtree who obviously are focused on their task and destination, and beyond that just a few transients from the Marta station.

Is the intent with the Chick-fil-A at Brookhaven Station to become a magnet for the transients? Again, not profiling, just identifying the target market here given the parking is not just inconvenient, it is extremely inconvenient for that location.

The real estate and location people at Chick-fil-A should be closely scrutinized for this decision.

Otherwise can someone reading this blog shed some light on their thinking and strategy?

I do not work for CFA, but I would bet their thinking is they will be doing a ton of order on the app and pick up at the curb business. They are currently completely redoing the Vinings location which should have nevber been permitted to be built there in thge first place. It's a postage stamp sized parcel with very little parking and a drive through lane that merges with the Starbucks next door that is also on a parcel that is too small for it. After finally reopening its dining room earlier this year, most of the CFA parking lot is desginated as curb side pick up spots - at least before the renovation.

The above posted is right about Taco Mac. We used to go to the Perimeter location pretty much weekly. We went back there the weekend before last and there were maybe 10 tables in use in the entire restaurant yet they were on a 25 minute wait due to lack of employees. There's no way they can survive on take-out. They always screw up something on take out as well.

PONKO Chicken is probably the most underrated fast-casual place in Atlanta. Hate to see any location close.

Eli, do you know what's being built to replace the former IHOP in Smyrna at the corner of South Cobb Drive and Church Road?

make sure you get the dark ponko sauce on the side or skip it all together because it is a sodium nightmare and actually detracts from the great taste of their chicken. I don’t know what they’re thinking. The original creators must have been thinking I think I’ll make one of the best chicken tenders in the nation, even better than Chick-fil-A, but let me cover it up with this disgusting sauce. Why would anybody want to cover up the product with a sticky salty mess? yuck

can never have too many chipotles! In the perimeter area they have one at Peachtree Station, one in the perimeter mall, one at Ashford Lane, and now they’re building a new one also in Dunwoody at the old tide cleaners location. I just wish they got the avocado supply chain solved because I could not get my guac anywhere in the last several weeks! What a tragedy to the Chipotle community. When I see they have no guac, I literally turn around.. :-(

Personally I hope BrewDog fails, as they have a lot of nerve opening a location here after the shenanigans they pulled on Scofflaw Brewing several years ago. They found their products removed from the shelves and taps of a number of establishments in Atlanta as a result. One of the BrewDog locations currently under construction is in Las Vegas on the southern end of the Strip in a development that includes a small format Target and a massive location of Olive Garden, so they'll be getting a lot of customers asking for a Budweiser....
