[EXCLUSIVE] The "Doc" Will See You Next Year in Dunwoody

A new to market restaurant from a founder who cut his teeth at Hillstone [Houston's] is coming to metro Atlanta.  Doc B's, an upscale American restaurant from Craig Bernstein and named after his late father "Doc B," will in 2023 join the dining options at Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody. The new restaurant, which will reportedly be about 7,000 square feet, will be built on a cleared outparcel adjacent to Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar, which opened this past February.

Bernstein opened the first Doc B's in Chicago in 2013 and has since expanded the fledgling chain to a total of eight locations throughout Florida, Illinois and Texas.  Other new Doc B's locations are planned for The Fashion Mall at Keystone in Indianapolis, and Fenton, a new mixed use development in Cary, North Carolina.  The new locations are slated to open in Winter 2022 and Spring 2023, respectively.

The Doc B's menu offers a variety of entree options, most ranging from about $15 to about $30.  The restaurant also features  six "WOK OUT® BOWLS," bowls made with assorted protein, sauce, grain and veggie options such as the Tofu Wok Out® Bowl and the Salmon Wok Out® Bowl, each served with broccoli, mushrooms, carrots and cashews, with the choice of Sticky Brown Rice, Shanghai Lo Mein, Quinoa, and Sesame Teriyaki or Sweet & Spicy Thai sauces.

Houston's, a concept on which Bernstein based some of the Doc B's experience,  once operated five restaurants in metro Atlanta, but closed its Dunwoody outpost on Ashford Dunwoody Road in 2007, its Cumberland area outpost on Powers Ferry Road in 2013, and its Buckhead restaurant on Lenox Road in 2018. Two other Houston's in Buckhead - on Peachtree Road south of Peachtree Battle and on Northside Parkway just off I-75 - remain open.  The former Dunwoody outpost, located less than a mile from Perimeter Mall in an outparcel of Perimeter Village shopping center, is today home to J. Alexander's, a Houston's-like concept.

Prior to the start of the pandemic, leases were in place for Sixty Vines (a wine bar) and Whiskey Cake (a "New American restaurant") to open at Perimeter Mall with the latter taking the place of Cowfish and the former set to occupy the space that Doc B's has now secured.  The Sixty Vines and Whiskey Cake leases were terminated in 2020 and Perimeter Mall owner Brookfield Properties Retail had to pivot to backfill the spaces.  The former Cowfish space was ultimately leased to P.F. Chang's which is currently under construction with plans to open by the end of the year.

In addition to Doc B's and P.F. Chang's, a new corporately owned, "flagship" Buffalo Wild Wings is under construction in an outparcel of Macy's near the intersection of Ashford Dunwoody Road and Hammond Drive, and 26 Thai Kitchen & Bar is slated to open at the front of the mall in the former Varasano's Pizzeria near Urban Outfitters.

Have you ever been to Doc B's?  Are you excited for the upcoming dining additions planned for Dunwoody?  What type of restaurant would you most like to see open in Dunwoody?

@Anon @ 12:39AM - thanks for your informative response. Here's my comment from someone who has eaten at one. It's a good restaurant. Reminiscent of Houston's or J. Alexanders with a bigger menu. Nothing spectacular. Nothing terrible. But overall, a good restaurant.

The pictures of their kitchen creations on their own website are not remarkable. Between the pictures on the website and on yelp and look at the menu it’s more reminiscent to the Grand Lux CafĂ© than it is to Houston’s or J Alexander’s.

The moment you hit the website you’re first met with a punch card type promotion that earns you “points” the more you spend, just like Kroger, no kidding. Second thing you’re met with is a coupon. All of it looks like schlock to me. I don’t think a points program or a coupon is anything that Houston’s or J Alexander’s would ever engage in.

It is likely they are successful not from foodies but from alcohol sales. Serve alcohol and they will come!

Well, there’s one here in Fort Lauderdale and it is to die for. I’ll give it a five star Michelin restaurant.. I am a member of the James Beard foundation!

Not sure of the restaurant is excellent here in Fort Lauderdale. If it’s still open after Covid that means it’s great.
