[EXCLUSIVE] Breadwinner Cafe Owner "Scores" Space for New Taco Joint

The owners of popular lunch spot Breadwinner Cafe are planning to open a new taco joint in Sandy Springs.  Tailgate Taqueria + Bar, a new concept from Melkonian Fine Foods, is slated to open in the vacant restaurant space to the right of Breadwinner in Springs Landing (220 Sandy Springs Circle Suite 205.)  Blue Grotto, a sushi and tapas bar, occupied the space most recently but the roughly 2,200 square foot space has sat vacant since the sushi joint's late 2019 closure. 

According to Breadwinner Cafe co-owner Geoff Melkonian, Tailgate is meant to be a fast casual, neighborhood spot that will feature traditional taco shop items and a full bar along with a few surprises... and soup, anything related to Breadwinner must have soup, MUST, he says.  

Current plans call for Tailgate to be open starting at 3PM for happy hour during the week and all day on weekends.  Although a full menu is still in the planning stages, Tailgate will give residents a taste of their restaurant on June 8 at the food and beverage festival Food That Rocks, at City Springs in Sandy Springs.  

Although Melkonian has controlled the Tailgate space for several months, it's only recently that things have progressed to the point where work to convert the space is on the immediate horizon.  Melkonian is planning for Tailgate to open in September, hopefully in time for the start of the NFL season on September 7.  

When asked how Tailgate will compete with the recently opened Rreal Tacos in the Kroger-anchored City Walk shopping center, Melkonian indicated that he's a fan of Rreal and excited to have them in the neighborhood.  A Sandy Springs area resident himself, Melkonian was already a customer of Rreal at their Midtown outpost and thinks they do a great job.  "I think we'll only make each other better," he says.  People can eat tacos every day, right? 

In addition to the Sandy Springs outpost of Breadwinner, the group's first, which opened in 2010, additional outposts have since opened in Dunwoody Village (2020) and The Chattahoochee Food Works on the "Upper Westside" (2022).  The group previously operated a separate but similar concept, "Farm to Ladle," with outposts at Ponce City Market and Avalon, but both have since closed.

You would have zero nickels, as the tacos all cost at least $6.

1:39, I think you're right...I'll need to get back over Don Pedro's in Norcross. Not as cheap as they used to be, but still under $3 per taco...

the owner should stick to soup and sandwiches. he has no experience making tacos. Smart customers won't patronize this place for over-priced gourmet tacos,when popular mexican restaurants are nearby. Expect this place to last no more than a year.

I hope the prices are reasonable but I've long said that City Springs screwed up by not having a cheap eats sandwich/taco spot for family lunch or dinner. Alpharetta has become such an amazing evening spot for families not just for the lawn (which City Springs has), but because you can go for the night and get a brewery beer, some tacos, drinks, and have fun with your family. City Springs has completely failed to give anyone with a family a reason to be there in the evenings. This will be across the street but hopefully it will help.
