[CLOSURE ALERT] Atlanta Tex-Mex Chain Shutters Local Restaurant

On The Border has closed its Buford restaurant after more than two decades in business.  The restaurant, located at 3206 Buford Drive, opened in 2001 and was located across from the Mall of Georgia.  The roughly 6,000 square foot restaurant closed quietly in recent days according to a ToNeTo Atlanta reader in the area.

The Tex-Mex chain is owned by Atlanta-based Argonne Capital Group, and following the closure continues to operate three other metro locations in Buckhead, Kennesaw and Alpharetta.

According to online listings, the restaurant previously served as a ghost kitchen for at least two "virtual" brands including Buddy V's Cake Slice and MrBeast Burger.

Property records indicate that the Buford restaurant sits on more than 2 acres, which could make it an appealing redevelopment site.

What is your favorite Tex-Mex restaurant in metro Atlanta?  What would you like to see replace On The Border in Buford?  What is your favorite Buford area restaurant?

Superica should grab it. On the Border was a tired brand.

I guess they were not “On the Border” after all!

We went to that location twice. Not enough help. one waitress running around like a chicken with her head cut off. Not a good experience.

I loved On The Border, but that location was awful the last couple times I went.
There was one in Duluth that was better. That is one I was sad to see go.

They are all going to close. Unfortunately, not enough investment is being done. They have had their own Tortilla chips on the shelves in stores forever (which probably doesn't have much to do with the restaurant at all) but no attempts are made to establish their menu items as unique and prices aren't particularly appealing. I think I liked their cheese dip but it's been many years. Chili's has also gone downhill but has a much better footing as a brand. The bottom line is there are real Mexican restaurants everywhere now and they will also make you the same Americanized dishes for a lower cost.

He knows more than you, the location in Kennesaw closed. Around the Atlanta area that only leaves the one in Buckhead.

Yes agree!! The service went down significantly after Covid. Very poorly managed.

We used to dine at this location often until I got PO’d at being charged $1.75 for a small thimble of sour cream.
