[EXCLUSIVE] Growing Donut Franchise Looks to Continue Suburban Success

For the first time in more than five years, a new Duck Donuts is opening in metro Atlanta.  Planning documents and an updated siteplan confirm that a new location of the donut franchise is coming to Silesboro Oaks (1720 Mars Hill Road), a Kroger-anchored shopping center in Acworth.  Duck Donuts will occupy a roughly 1,400 square foot space to the left of Kroger.

The franchise, born in North Carolina's Outer Banks in the city of Duck in 2006, is now based in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and includes some 100 or so locations across the country as well as single international locations in Canada, Egypt, Qatar, and Thailand.

Duck Donuts separates itself from other doughnut purveyors by making its doughnuts fresh to order for each customer, in front of each customer.  The concept is novel but is not without challenges.  A franchisee previously operated Duck Donuts locations in both Buckhead and Toco Hills but both "temporarily closed" in 2023, a move that we have since confirmed was permanent.  The Toco Hills location, delayed several months, opened in December 2019.

A separate location closed this past December in Savannah after six years in business.

Locally, Duck Donuts locations remain open in Alpharetta and East Cobb but the East Cobb unit in Merchants Walk ic currently for sale.

Are you excited for the opening of Duck Donuts in Acworth?  Who do you think makes the best donut in Atlanta?  What other types of eateries would you like to see open in Acworth?

I can’t believe duck donuts closed in Buckhead and also in toco. It was a trip from Perimeter to Buckhead, but it was worth it. Even their plain doughnut with no dips or toppings was best in class. Maybe One will open in the Perimeter. Quack quack, I want my duck doughnut, back!

Didn’t last long in Pinehurst NC. Expensive and gimmicky.
