[WOW] Slim & Husky's Pizza to "Ghost" West Midtown

Slim & Husky's Pizza announced Thursday that it will close its West Midtown location at 1016 Howell Mill Road on Sept. 22.  WSBTV was first to report on the planned closure.

The chain reportedly plans to redirect its focus to its other Atlanta area locations at Morehouse College and on Metropolitan Pkwy in Adair Park in Southwest Atlanta.

Atlanta has been an integral part of the Slim & Husky’s story, and we look forward to being a part of this amazing city for years to come,” shared Clint Gray, one of Slim & Husky’s three co-founders. The pizza chain says the Metropolitan Pkwy location will expand its hours starting on Oct. 1.

When the Howell Mill restaurant opened, it replaced One Rooster Mongolian Bar which had opened in early 2017 but was gone by early 2018.  The Real Chow Baby had earlier held court in the roughly 4,100 square foot space from 2005 until late 2014.

Nashville-based Slim & Husky first opened in 2017 and became known for naming its pizza, wings, and other menu items after influential hip-hop groups and R&B singers.

Some of Slim & Husky's hip-hop themed menu items include "Cee No Green" (a meat lover’s pizza) named for Atlanta's CeeLo Green, "California Love," after a Tupac song by the same name, "Rony, Roni, Rone!" after 90s R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné!, "Nuthin' but a "V" Thang" (a vegan pizza), in honor of the hit song Nuthin' but a "G" Thang by Dr. Dre, "Salt N’ Peppas" wings for 80s/90s hip-hop group Salt-N-Peppa and "Too Short Cakes" for rapper Too Short.

There are currently six Slim & Huskys across greater Nashville, including one at Nashville International Airport in addition to a single unit in Memphis.

The chain expanded to Atlanta with the opening of the West Midtown restaurant in May 2019, followed by the pandemic delayed opening in Adair Park in June 2020. The company also opened a location in downtown Chattanooga in June 2022, but closed it this past February.  A location opened in Sacramento in August 2020, but shuttered this past April.  A satellite location at the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga and another in Madison, Tenn. opened in 2023, but both have since closed.

What was at the time the chain's third Atlanta area unit opened in February 2023 on Westview Drive at Morehouse College.

Slim & Husky's imminent closure is the latest in a string of West Midtown closures that includes the surprising departures of Ford Fry's Superica and London-based Wagamama, both after less than two years in business.  Charleston-based chicken joint Boxcar Betty's closed their lone Atlanta location at West Midtown Westside Paper earlier this March after less than one year in business.

Multiple real estate sources tell ToNeTo Atlanta that several West Midtown restaurants are weak performers compared to their other locations in metro Atlanta and in some cases, chainwide.

Have you ever been to Slim & Husky's Pizza?  Are you surprised to see Slim & Husky's close on the Westside?  Do you think West Midtown has too many restaurants?

Not surprised. It was ok pizza. Not worth the price. Went twice and the pizza had to much flop. Like it was not cooked in the middle. It was a turn off. Bye 👋

Live in the neighborhood. It was OK pizza, but nothing really to get excited about. Not surprised they are closing. There is so much competition in West Midtown, restaurants have to be really good to do well. Many are packed on weekends like The Optimist, Barcelona, Velvet Taco, etc.

I don’t like that wet pizza that you have to bend over to eat.
