[EXCLUSIVE] Wayfair Bringing Rare New Outlet Store to Georgia

Online retailer Wayfair is bringing a special new physical store experience to Georgia.  Updated leasing materials confirm that the new store is coming to Augusta Exchange (1144 Robert C. Daniel Jr. Parkway) in Augusta.  Wayfair Outlet will occupy a 26,735 square foot junior anchor space previously home to buybuyBABY.

According to the Wayfair Outlet website there are currently just five stores: Florence, Kentucky; San Marcos, Texas; Deer Park, New York; Naperville, Illinois; and Greensboro, North Carolina.  The Naperville store, a suburb of Chicago, is the company's newest, having just opened October 3.

The stores sell returned items and discounted items in good condition "across a variety of product categories," according to store representatives.

Notable policies at the store include "no holds," no store associate may assist in the loading of any merchandise, no returns are allowed, and no cash is accepted (but all major credit cards are).

Wayfair has, in recent years, tested several brick-and-mortar concepts, but the new outlet store will be the company's first physical store in Georgia.  The company currently operates three warehouse facilities within the state in McDonough, Athens, and Port Wentworth near Savannah.

This past May the company debuted its highly anticipated first large format retail store, a 150,000 square foot flagship in Wilmette, a suburb of Chicago.

Urban Outfitters for nine years operated "Final Cut," a similarly described outlet store, in the Augusta suburb of Martinez, but it closed last summer.

Augusta is about two and a half hours from Buckhead.

It's not clear why Wayfair chose Augusta to launch its retail effort in Georgia, but Augusta Exchange is reportedly the #5 most trafficked retail center in Georgia, with 8.2 million visits per year.

Augusta Exchange is currently anchored by Target, Hobby Lobby, Staples, Regal Cinemas, and PetSmart.  In years past the center was home to hhgregg, Sports Authority, Bed Bath & Beyond, Payless ShoeSource, Pier 1 Imports, and Christmas Tree Shops (andThat!), among others.  More recently, the center has added several new junior anchors including Urban Air Adventure Park (the former hhgregg), Dollar Tree (the former Pier 1 Imports), Burlington (the former Sports Authority) and BrandsMart USA (the former Ashley Furniture).

Elsewhere in Georgia, and closer to metro Atlanta, Crate & Barrel operates an outlet store on Peachtree Boulevard in Chamblee, RH (Restoration Hardware) operates an outlet at Dawson Marketplace in Dawsonville, and West Elm has an outlet at North Georgia Premium Outlets, also in Dawsonville.

Wayfair is not alone in bringing new stores to Georgia.

ToNeTo Atlanta exclusively reported in March that TJX Cos. was bringing their off-price HomeGoods sibling store Homesense to metro Atlanta with a store in Peachtree City.  We also exclusively reported in May that the company was bringing their off-price outdoors retailer Sierra to the state with a store in McDonough.  The Sierra store is slated to open this Saturday October 12, followed by the Homesense store before the end of the year.

Are you excited about the planned opening of a Wayfair Outlet in Georgia?  Where do you do the majority of your housewares and furniture shopping?  Where else would you like to see Wayfair or others expand in metro Atlanta?

Frisco, TX is supposed to be getting a new large format retail store like the one in Chicago.

Hope the furniture is nicer than the gaudy crap they have at the Dump.

This feels like an odd location for this unless Wayfair did some sort of study that found a majority of their orders in the southeast came from homes within a hour’s distance or something similar. It seems like the outlets on 400 would make a more logical location considering they have a Pottery Barn outlet and Restoration Hardware outlet and both seem to do a pretty good business.

I hope its really nice furniture, already built, with no damage, scratches or dents, for very cheap. Crate & Barrel quality, Walmart price. Otherwise I won’t bother.

Strange that they open it in Augusta, and not near other outlets.

One would think that the shipping costs to Augusta from their warehouses would make it closer to a warehouse.
Perhaps a upper level executive lives in the area or they got a huge deal on rent and taxes. I don't see a need to travel two plus hours to visit the location. Maybe they are going to capitalize on the Masters traffic.

I would guess, Augusta may be the site of their product returns or a order fulfillment center. Hence choosing Augusta as a scratch & dent store.

Probably should read the article before making comments that are talked about in the news article LOL

There is already an Overstock store there …

When will they open

Like when WTBS used to start shows 5 minutes after the hour or half. Their times were all like that too and you had to read TV guide to see it or watch the promos and read the graphics on screen with the start time.

So no helping load furniture what's the point of having employees? They will not last long and hope this store closes in Augusta really quick.

Overstock has a huge sign that it’s closing right now out there.

So excited for this. I work at a different retail in this location and there’s definitely a lot of traffic. Makes sense why they would choose this area.

They are already closing

No employees. Self checkout.
