[EXCLUSIVE] New Whiskey & Cocktail Bar to Open in Former Little Trouble Space

A new whiskey & cocktail bar is looking to find success in a part of Atlanta that has seen significant turnover in recent months.  Barrel Proof, which started in New Orleans in 2013 before expanding to Nashville in 2023, is looking to open at White Provisions in West Midtown later this year.

Specifically, Barrel Proof is backfilling the beloved Little Trouble (1170 Howell Mill Road, P-10C), another cocktail bar, which closed at the project in August 2023 after eight years in business.

A permit filed with the City of Atlanta indicates that the group plans to spend more than $300,000 renovating the 3,167 square foot space, including a "limited demolition, new bar and a new ADA restroom."

According to the menus of the existing locations, Barrel Proof is known for their extensive whiskey options - they stopped counting at 300 - with new, limited, single barrel picks, and "baller whiskies" added every week.  The bar also offers assorted cocktails, beers, and seltzers.  Food-wise the menu is pretty basic and limited with a burger, fried chicken sandwich, patty melt, hot dog, wings, and fries and really nothing in the healthy or veggie-friendly department, but perhaps the menu will be tweaked, too.

The two existing locations - in New Orleans' Lower Garden District and Nashville's Germantown neighborhood - are open daily from 4pm until 1am.

Barrel Proof's imminent arrival in West Midtown comes at a time when the sub-market has been rocked by a wave of high-profile restaurant closures, most in a relatively short window.

Although reported in recent weeks by many other media, it was ToNeTo Atlanta that first rang the alarm and noted the concerning number of West Midtown restaurant closures.

Humble Pie closed January 30 at The Interlock, a closure that came on the heels of the shutters of Pour Taproom, also at The Interlock, as well as those of Postino and Culinary Dropout at The Brickworks earlier last month.  The area also saw the closure of not one, but three breakfast spots including Snooze an A.M. Eatery, West Egg Cafe, and Cultivate, with Pancake Social at Westside Paper still open but listed for sale.  Restaurants Elsewhere Brewing, Girl Diver, Le Fat, Slim+Husky, L.O.A. Social Club, Superica, Boxcar Betty's, and Wagamama also closed in West Midtown in 2024.

Aziza and Falafel Nation from Atlanta's Oliva Restaurants, located above the Little Trouble space, both closed at White Provisions this past April with their respective spaces still vacant.

Have you been to the Nashville or New Orleans Barrel Proof?  Do you think Barrel Proof can successfully take the baton from Little Trouble?  Why do you think so many restaurants and bars have closed in West Midtown?

Please share your thoughts below.

These people must not know anything about Atlanta. No one is going to go to a chain cocktail bar in West Midtown. You can’t get many people to go to good local bars in West Midtown.

I wouldn’t call 3 locations a chain

"What qualifies something as a chain?
What Makes a Chain. A chain business is comprised of a group of stores (two or more) that possess the same brand name, adhere to the same corporate policies, sell the same products, and are all owned by the same parent company." Quack Quack.

It's having yet another superior city's idea put in place in Atlanta because Atlanta stopped being original 25 years ago.

They should just tear all the buildings down in the entire area and let it be a forest again like in prehistoric times. Best to move to New York, they have plenty of room and are super affordable, clean and everything there is just perfect!
