Brookhaven's new Publix Super Market is about 60 days from opening! Store employees at the existing Publix at Oglethorpe Crossing indicate that their store will close as of July 22 with the new store at nearby Cambridge Square expected to open July 23.
Kroger closed its store at Cambridge Square in August 2020 citing "declining sales and negative profit over an extended period" as reasons for the closure. Kroger operated the Cambridge Square store for 19 years before which it was a Harris Teeter, and before that, a Winn Dixie.
Lakeland, Florida-based Publix has been especially active in Georgia in recent years both with new store openings, as well as relocations of existing stores. Georgia and its 219 stores are already Publix's second largest market by unit count behind the grocer's home market of Florida with nearly 900.
Publix has in recent months opened new stores in Buckhead, Gainesville, Sharpsburg, and Villa Rica, while it in early 2022 relocated a Tucker store from an existing center to a new project, Hugh Howell Marketplace. ToNeTo Atlanta was first to report that the grocer also plans to relocate its existing store at Shamrock Plaza near Decatur to the upcoming Lulah Hills project on the site of the former North DeKalb Mall.
In Cambridge Square, Publix joins the recently opened Brooklyn Bagel & Deli (in the former Starbucks), with a new Pet Supplies Plus (in the former Dollar Tree) slated to open later this year.

Is the new Publix going to have a bar inside the store like the one at Disco Publix in Buckhead on Piedmont Road. I was there last Sunday on May 18 and it huge inside. At the bar they had coffee, wine and beer there.
Looking forward to the new Publix but dread getting in and out of that parking lot! Ate lunch at Brooklyn Bagel and got bagels to go, thought overall it was just meh, nothing special.
I remember when the Oglethorpe Crossing store opened. It was initially a 24 hour store but gradually the hours got cut back to the current 10PM close. There is/was a CVS around the corner from them as well as a small nail salon. Not sure if those places are still there. I wonder if another grocery store such as an Aldi could go in the Publix space. The Kroger also used to be 24 hours back in the day when I lives in the area.
Publix builds these beautiful stores with Whole Foods Market type amenities but then do not have the staff capacity to adequately service the deli and hot bar areas, especially during lunch rush.
CVS and the nail shop are still there, and a dry cleaners.
Must be some confusion. Kroger was open 24/7 for years, but the service at that Kroger was even worse overnight than is was during the day. Publix has never been open 24 hours. From an internet search:
