[UPDATE] QuikTrip Closing in on 200 Locations in Georgia as Regional Rival Grows its Presence

QuikTrip (QT) will later this summer open two new stores in metro Atlanta.  The stores - in Marietta and Peachtree Corners - add to what is already a significant Atlanta area presence for the Tulsa-based fuel retailer and convenience store operator.

In Marietta, QuikTrip is opening at the corner of Cobb Parkway and Roswell Road across the street from The Big Chicken in Cobb County.  ToNeTo Atlanta first reported on the planned opening this past September.  The new QT, which will have sixteen pumps, replaces both a former Budget rental facility and a Checkers restaurant.

In Peachtree Corners, QuikTrip is opening at the intersection of Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Cash Court, near the onetime BJ's Wholesale Club, in Gwinnett County.  The new QT, which will have fourteen pumps, will be across the street from where Atlanta-based RaceTrac opened a location in 2014.

According to Aisha Jefferson, QuikTrip's Corporate Communications Manager, the Marietta location is projected to open June 19, followed by the Peachtree Corners location on August 7.

A QuikTrip planned for a onetime Pizza Hut in Roswell is no longer happening.  Pitched for 8514 Holcomb Bridge Road, the new QuikTrip was proposed this past fall, but according to Jefferson, the company is "no longer moving forward with this location."  Following the Pizza Hut closure, the building was home to a Verizon Wireless but sits vacant today.

"We determined that the location was not a suitable fit. We are excited about exploring alternative sites that better align with our strategic goals and offer promising future opportunities," Jefferson added.

There are currently 177 QuikTrip locations in Georgia, making the Peach State the company's second largest market by unit count behind Texas and its 299 stores.

RaceTrac, by comparison, has 164 locations in Georgia, also the Atlanta-based company's second market, but behind Florida with 299.  Texas is home to 135 stores.

QuikTrip's aggressive expansion could be attributed to the recent arrival of Wawa in Georgia.  The Pennsylvania-based operator, known for its superior food offerings, opened in Bainbridge in southwest Georgia this past November and has since added locations in Jesup, Dock Junction, Hinesville, Flemington, and Pooler.  In total, the company has plans for at least 20 more locations in Georgia over the next few years.  Wawa has not indicated any clear intention to enter the metro Atlanta market.

Are you excited about the new upcoming QT stores in metro Atlanta?  What convenience store operator do you think does it best?  Do you think Wawa will attempt the metro Atlanta market?

Please share your thoughts below.

I imagine they will only continue to dominate the Atlanta market. Gas is now down to 1.98 per gallon due to increased domestic production so we will probably see a lot more vacation travel this summer
