[EXCLUSIVE] Abandoned Lidl to Become New Tractor Supply Co

It seems Lidl has completely abandoned its plan to open a second store in Woodstock.  The grocery store, located at 11956 Highway 92, sat built and completed but idle for more than eighteen months, with the grocer having previously indicated it would open the store...eventually.

Another metro store at 4325 Belthelview Road in Cumming also sat built but idle for more than a year before the grocer finally opened it last September.

The second Woodstock store was not so lucky.  City of Woodstock planning documents indicate, however, that the new plan for the site is for it to be converted into a new location of Tractor Supply Co.  For its part, Lidl continues to operate its original Woodstock location at 6421 Bells Ferry Road.

The Brentwood, Tennessee-based retailer wants to renovate the existing 28,142 square foot building and add a roughly 11,000 square foot fenced in outdoor display area.  The addition of the outdoor area will mean a slight reduction of parking which necessitated the retailer seeking a variance to reduce the required parking from 94 spaces to 81 on the roughly five acre property, which the city approved.

Tractor Supply Company began in 1938 as a Chicago-area mail-order business focused on providing quality tractor parts to farmers at fair prices. The business has expanded tremendously since then and today includes products for home improvement, agriculture, lawn and garden maintenance, livestock, and equine care for recreational farmers and ranchers, pet owners, and landowners, among other offerings.

In 2024, another Tractor Supply Co. store was proposed in place of a former Ethan Allen store along North Point Parkway in Alpharetta, but the development has yet to move forward.

Tractor Supply currently operates 97 stores around Georgia, including those in Carrollton, Newnan, Buford, Douglasville, Griffin, and Gainesville, among others.  In total, the company operates more than 2,300 stores across 48 states.

Are you excited to hear about the upcoming opening of Tractor Supply Co. in Woodstock?

This Woodstock location would be a tough one for yet another grocery store. Within about 1/2 mile there is a Kroger, Publix and super WalMart. Within a mile is an Aldi store. Plus the location has difficult access if you are driving west on Hwy. 92. So it makes sense that Lidl abandoned that location.

Just glad something's being done with the building at last . . . now what's happening with the shuttered Sonic next door? Chain link fencing was put up around it a couple of weeks ago but no movement since.

As a prior Kroger employee, I assure you there is no plan to open an additional Kroger store in or near by. Kroger has an odd management style, and will close profitable stores, even against customers demands. Then, at additional expense they will open an additional store, often with in walking distance to the closed store. Naturally, the long time Kroger customers have since found a replacement for the closed store and do not frequent the new location. I am personally aware of this Kroger management plan. For some strange reason Kroger continues this odd money loosing practice. I believe this odd behavior may continue until Kroger follows Sears into bankruptcy. It is similar to the Sears style of misunderstanding the customer shopping demands. One big difference is Sears demise was caused by only one corrupt and greedy CEO, Kroger's failure is being caused by the entire management board. Kroger can still survive, but not with the current management direction.

Tractor Supply us well run and has excellent checks and balances in place. Kroger is the Intresting case study and might not survive with current management. Immediate changes need to take place to save Kroger.

If the management board is loosing money then Sears style stores will open.
