[EXCLUSIVE] Inspire Brands Quietly Shutters Multi-Brand Alliance Kitchen in Atlanta

Atlanta-based Inspire Brands has quietly closed its highly touted ghost kitchen "Alliance Kitchen" after about five years in operation.  Alliance Kitchen opened along Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard in West Midtown and was heralded by company executives at the time as the future of restaurant operations.

Inspire Brands, which incudes Arby's, Buffalo Wild Wings, Jimmy John's, SONIC, Dunkin' and Baskin-Robbins, quietly launched Alliance Kitchen in July 2021 before announcing its existence to the world that November.

At the time of the official reveal, Inspire co-founder and CEO Paul Brown called Alliance Kitchen "the first ghost kitchen launched, owned, and operated by a multi-brand restaurant company."

Located at 1425 Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard in The Lumberyard Office Lofts (the same complex as Bone Garden Cantina), the venture was a digital-forward concept offering guests menu items from Arby's, Buffalo Wild Wings, Jimmy John's, SONIC, and Dunkin' – all available for delivery (via owned or third-party apps) or pickup.

The shared kitchen design reduced labor needs by 54%, square footage needs by 19%, decreased equipment costs by 45%, and reduced energy consumption by more than 50% compared with five stand-alone restaurants, according to Inspire.

Despite its "operational efficiencies" and the fact that it was a corporately run operation, the location amassed just 165 reviews in five years and an overall 3.9 star rating.  Five out of six of the most recent reviews were one star.

Its closure after five years likely marks the completion of a five-year lease but also signals that the concept was not as efficient or successful as the company had hoped.

Inspire, backed by Atlanta-based private equity firm Roark, announced in early May its confidential submission of its draft registration statement for proposed Initial Public Offering (IPO).  The closure of Alliance Kitchen and that of other Arby's in metro Atlanta and around the country is seen by observers to whom ToNeTo Atlanta spoke as steps taken by the company to "clean up its balance sheet" ahead of the proposed public offering.

Following the Alliance Kitchen closure, Arby's and Dunkin' continue to operate their own standalone restaurants along nearby Howell Mill Road, while a onetime Jimmy John's that later became a drive-thru testing facility sits vacant and available.
