[ALERT] Midtown Residents Will Need to Find A New Place to Start Their New Years Resolution in 2027

LA Fitness is slated to close another Atlanta area gym.  ToNeTo Atlanta confirmed this week that the nationwide gym operator will close its Midtown Atlanta (Tech Square) facility as of December 28 at 2pm.  The LA Fitness in Midtown is located at 75 5th Street near Georgia Tech.

The gym operator did not indicate a reason for the closure but it comes as the Irvine, Calif.-based chain, a division of Fitness International LLC, closes several locations locally and nationally.  Online research suggests that within the past year the company has closed at least a dozen gyms across the country.  In metro Atlanta, LA Fitness closed a location on Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw as of December 18, 2025, and on Roswell Road in East Cobb as of July 20, 2026.

The Midtown location measures nearly 29,000 square feet and opened in 2003.  The facility closed in June 2009 after the primary parking deck adjacent to the gym collapsed.  The Midtown location reopened in February 2010 as "Esporta Athletic Club," a mid-tier gym, also operated by Fitness International.  The swap was not well received and by July 2010 the Tech Square location had closed and was subsequently reopened as a LA Fitness.

Its size puts it on the smaller side of LA Fitness locations, making the possibility of it being converted to the company's upscale "Club Studio" concept unlikely.  The company introduced the Club Studio concept to metro Atlanta in August 2025 when it replaced a standard LA Fitness in Brookhaven.  ToNeTo Atlanta reported in June that another new Club Studio is coming to the Avenue West Cobb in West Cobb, and in October we reported that another Club Studio is coming to Perimeter Pointe in Sandy Springs where it will replace a traditional LA Fitness location.

Following its closure, LA Fitness will still operate two Midtown area locations including one at Atlantic Station less than two miles away and another at Ansley Mall, just over two miles away.  Rival fitness operator Planet Fitness opened a new gym in March 2024 at Tower Square (675 West Peachtree) which is only a half mile from the closing LA Fitness.

Interestingly, as LA Fitness trims its local and national footprint, rival chain EōS Fitness plans to open 50 locations across Georgia over the next ten years with at least six already in their immediate pipeline for 2027 and 2028.   EōS Fitness started in Dallas in 2015 and today operates more than 150 locations with more than 100 additional planned or coming soon.

Are you surprised to see LA Fitness close its Midtown Atlanta location at Tech Square?  If you are a current member, which location do you plan to move to?  What would you most like to see open in place of LA Fitness at Tech Square?
