Del Taco Almost Makes A Comeback In Georgia

Thanks to keen OTP readers Cody P. and Jonathan D. for this interesting tip: Lake Forest California-based Del Taco, a Mexican American fast food chain, left Atlanta long ago but it seems one brave entrepreneur almost brought them back, then came the credit crunch. Currently on hold, a site at Highway 92 and I-20 on Fairburn Road in Douglasville was to be the first new Del Taco in Georgia but work has stalled. The franchisee received approval on the location almost two years ago but the site has yet to be developed. Financing fell through for the space and the franchisee has been unable to secure new financing. With Costa Mesa California-based El Pollo Loco and Guatemala-based Pollo Campero entering the Atlanta market around the same time the franchisee got approval, that too may have played a part in the delay. (El Pollo Loco experienced problems of their own in Atlanta) In the early 90s, Del Tacos in Atlanta were stand alone but in the mid 90s they were opened as "dual branded" sites with Mrs. Winner's Chicken & Biscuits. The first dual-branded location was in Suwanee but later locations opened closer in, one in Duluth and one on Cotillion Drive in Dunwoody (now a McDonald's). By the early 2000s all local Georgia locations had closed. What's your favorite Tex-Mex or Mexican American fast food chain? Do you miss Del Taco? Leave a comment and share your thoughts. Its brutal isn't it. I grew up in Barstow so living here this represents California and home for me. I find that the one in boiling springs, south carolina is only a 3 hour drive, and its a nice drive. So just try to come up with excuses to get sent to charlotte and you drive right past it.

Urbanspoon is claiming there's one in Duluth near Gwinnett Place Mall now. I can find reason to be out that way and have some Del Inferno sauce on my tacos this week.
