Lenox Square & Phipps Plaza Updates

Please find a number of moves, openings, relocations and closures at Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza after the jump.

David Yurman will soon relocate to the former Kate Spade space in the Luxury Wing as Kate Spade itself relocated to Phipps Plaza.  David Yurman is moving temporarily, as they will be expanding their current space to include the adjacent Mont Blanc space.  Mont Blanc is relocating a few doors down to the former Aldo.

Gregory's, located on the first level of the Neiman Marcus wing, will reportedly close by the end of June.   The store was never popular, much like its predecessor Pure Denim, but somehow kept the doors open over two years.

Jimmy Choo is relocating from Phipps Plaza to Buckhead Atlanta later this year.   This move puts its first floor Phipps Plaza location in play. I've thus far been unable to confirm anyone interested in and or taking the space, but expect it will be a desirable spot for luxury retailers looking to enter the market.

Mistura Timepieces opened quietly in a hidden location near the former Carol's Daughter and Forever 21.  Mistura has only four stores in the North America, and Atlanta is home to two, in Lenox Square and Perimeter Mall.  The others are in Dallas, Texas and Toronto, Canada.

Intermix, currently located on the first level of the Sak's Fifth Avenue wing at Phipps Plaza, may be on the move.  The designer retailer was acquired by Gap last year, and its move is reportedly due to Gap's efforts to bring all its brands into Lenox.  Earlier this year, Gap opened its Athleta store at Lenox Square joining existing locations of Gap, Gap Kids / Baby and Banana Republic.  (Gap's other brand, Old Navy, is located at Buckhead Station, just off GA 400.)  No location within Lenox Square has been announced, but with the former Kate Spade space available soon, it would make the most sense.

The Cheesecake Factory opened yesterday at the front of Lenox Square.  The existing location, about a mile south on Peachtree, is now closed.  (The former location opened in 1993 and was the company's  eighth restaurant.)

Zinburger Wine and Burger Bar opens June 17th

True Food Kitchen opens June 24th.

Any announcement into what's going into the old Cheesecake Factory?

@AJ,

Nothing has been finalized that I'm aware of. You better believe I'm on it though!

Hope to have news in the coming months.

Thanks as always for your comments and readership.

Gregory's was never popular, much like its predecessor Pure Denim. Yet, Pure Denim is still open.

What about Subway in the food court? I know months ago you said it was moving. Any status on what might take its place?

@Anon RE: Subway,

I don't recall having said Subway was moving and have no knowledge of such a move. I imagine that it does well and won't be on the move.

Thanks for your readership, I'm sorry for the confusion.

What about Wolford closing? They are in the luxury wing at Phipps.

@Anon RE: Wolford,

You are right. That closure took place about two months ago so I figured it was old news by now.

Thanks for your comment and your readership.

What stores will go into the Juicy Couture and Wolford spaces in the Phipps Plaza Luxury Wing? These are both prime spaces.

@Anon RE: Phipps vacancies,

At this point I don't have solid intel on what will open in these two spaces. Jimmy Choo will also soon be vacant as well Intermix. Lots of options.

I hope to have news soon!

Thanks for your readership and your comments!

How do you think Phipps is going to manage as a luxury mall once Buckhead Atlanta is open? I know people down south appreciate an indoor mall because of our miserable weather but OliverMcMillan seems to be able to lure a level of retailers Phipps so far has not.

I really want Buckhead Atlanta to succeed, however, is it really going to? There are a good bit of very nice, impressive new-to-market names going in there, however, only 1/3 of the space has been announced, and with that half or more are restaurants. I thought that the Hermes store was going to be over 10,000 square feet, but they scaled back to just 4,000.
I really like some of these stores, and I really want the project to succeed but I am a little skeptical with the amount of space that hasn't been announced yet.

I don't think that Phipps has been able to lure these brands because of the Belk and Legoland, and also because of the fact that it is 2014 and the mall looks like 1990.

Gregory's is a very nice concept as they bring in very unique international pieces. It does well in Dallas where it's based out of. I think people just weren't familiar with it in Atlanta.

For some reason a lot of things survive in Houston and Dallas that do not survive here. Their urban shopper populations are lower though.

Houston and Dallas tend to be more fashion forward and definitely have a larger international population than Atlanta.

The whole southern uniform of pastel polo, khaki shorts, and boat shoes doesn't really go towards the high end places that these other cities offer. This isn't to say there isn't a segment in Atlanta that won't shop there, it's just not as in large numbers as other cities.

I am really intersted to see how Buckhead Atlanta handles the "urban" crowd once they start showing up. They will show up, too.

If they behave themselves, refrain from shoplifting, and make at least an occasional purchase, they'll be welcomed like any other customer.

Could you provide a link supporting a supposed Hermes downsizing? From my understanding, they were always looking to lease 4,100 square feet of space even during the project's Ben Carter days.

To succeed Buckhead Atlanta needs to attract international buyers and buyers from other more sophisticated cities like NYC and LA. The root of the problem is many people just fly thru and changeover at the airport on their way to shop in Miami or NYC. Buckhead needs some more branding to encourage people to stay over and do some high end shopping.

I'm more concerned about the "suburban" crowd. You know, the ones with giant sticks up their rear ends that think its somehow cute to refer to black people as "urban" to mask their galling insecurities. Those are the worst shoppers in Buckhead.

They won't... They won't.... They WON'T!!!

Excuse me, I was mistaken. The Miami store was going to be 12,000 square feet. I apologize for the mix up.

Howdy! Re: Subway. Was referring to your January 16th post when you were also talking about Figo moving into the food court. http://www.tonetoatl.com/2014/01/fresh-news-from-fashion-cafe-at-lenox.html.
I think it would have been awesome if they could have. But oh well... Love your column. One of my favorites to read each day! Thanks!

I bet Buckhead Atlanta will see more purchases from "urban" shoppers than "suburban" ones anyway — my black friends are far more fashion-forward than my white ones.

you saw what happened to that area of Buckhead when the "urban" crowd began ruining the nightlife for everyone with the crime, muggings and shootings there? the primary residents of that area who control alot of the tax revenue within the city of Atlanta had most of those establishments closed, and if the "urban" crowd starts the same crap again as they did a few years ago, those shops will be shut down as well...Keep in mind that that portion of Peachtree is only a block away from Paces Ferry where most of the wealth of Atlanta is concentrated as well as the Governor's mansion, I can assure you they bad behavior will not be tolorated....have a nice day :)
