Chick-fil-A Planning Glenwood Park Opening

Chicken chain headed to new intown project

Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A plans to open a new location in the upcoming Fuqua project at Glenwood Avenue and Bill Kennedy Way in Glenwood Park. Glenwood Place will be anchored by a 114,000 square foot Kroger grocery store, and will include some 25,000 square feet of additional restaurant and retail space. The project will also reportedly include 230 "luxury multi-family units."

The new Chick-fil-A would open in a freestanding outparcel within the complex and would also have an all important drive-thru.

I originally heard talk of the planned location in the Glenwood project late last year, but only recently has someone close to the project confirmed it.

While a Chick-fil-A opening in East Atlanta is a big deal, I doubt it will get the same kind of excitement that Cook-Out got for its new location on Moreland Avenue or that Zaxby's got for their newish location on Ponce de Leon Avenue.

According to a permit filed with the city of Atlanta last week, the Chick-fil-A building is expected to cost $1.1 million to construct.

As I've previously announced, Chick-fil-A is also opening new locations in Dunwoody by Perimeter Mall and in west midtown on Northside Drive.

Current plans call for the Dunwoody and Northside Drive locations to open late this fall, while the Glenwood Chick-fil-A is slated for an early 2016 opening.

Leave it to Atlanta and Fuqua to tarnish a world-class pedestrian/transit trail with an automobile-oriented fast-food restaurant. Will we ever learn?

How long is this "world-class" pedestrian/transit trail you speak of?

Oh you've never heard of it? It's called the Atlanta Beltline. Step out of your car long enough to google it.

I visit the Silver Comet several times a week. There I can ride 100 miles. From what I understand of the beltway it is severely disjointed and only small portions of it exist - way too short to actually use unless you are interested in a one mile workout.

So again, I ask you the expert - how long is this trail?

The Silver Comet is perfectly nice for a fitness trail out in the woods; the BeltLine is entirely different. It is new urban transportation infrastructure. There was also a time in the Silver Comet's past when it was unfinished, so I don't see the point of being snotty about the fact that the BeltLine is still being designed and constructed. And if you are actually under the impression that only a mile of the BeltLine has been completed you are badly out of touch with reality.

Back to the topic at hand: this is 100% a slap in the face to the Glenwood Park residents who have opposed Fuqua's development all along. But Fuqua is a smart, if slimy, guy. Even though people in the area are furious about this, the chain is still going to do beaucoup business. It's a Chick-fil-a with a drive-thru in the middle of Atlanta, right beside an interstate off-ramp. It, and the Kroger, will be wildly successful. It's still disappointing that Fuqua didn't see the potential for what he had in that land: for inspiration you need look no further than just across the interstate, where Paces Properties just announced they're spending $125 million on a new mixed-use development on Memorial Drive, but with no chain stores. Paces knows what they are doing; Krog Street Market is a gigantic success.

I know that Fuqua is everyone's favorite whipping boy, but I think his plan is a plus for the area. He will develop an extension of the Beltline, decent (if not spectacular) retail and new apartments in place of an fenced-off, abandoned cement plant. What Glenwood needs is butts in seats. Fuqua's development will do that.

Funny, Gunshot and several other businesses don't need buts in their seats. I cannot wait for karma, and if I have to wait ten years or more when he gets his I will silently be satisfied.
His disrespect of the community that is already there is the best sign he is an "old boy". I will always keep up with his cardboard developments now.

A drive-thru is inappropriate at this location. The best response is not to eat at the restaurant.
