Bits & Bites

Highland Bakery has opened its newest location on West Ponce de Leon Avenue  in Decatur.  Another new location is expected to open at 25 Park Place, in downtown Atlanta near Georgia State University.  The downtown location is currently expected to open early next year.

Winstop plans to open a new location in the Kroger-anchored Hairston Village shopping center on North Hairston Road in Stone Mountain.

Hollister Co. has reopened at Lenox Square after a brief remodel.  The most obvious change for the retailer is a departure from the chain's original "beach shack" exterior. The newly remodeled store features a far more modern, updated exterior with lots of glass.  The store is located on the mall's upper level, near Nike and Corner Bakery.

Casual Mexican eatery Huey Luey's opened their new restaurant in Sandy Springs this past Monday.  The new restaurant, located at the corner of Roswell and Abernathy Roads, joins existing locations in Hiram and Acworth.  A fourth location is reportedly in the works for a former Joe's Crab Shack in Douglasville.  Other areas being targeted for new locations are Cumming, Alpharetta and Columbus.

In other Mexican news,  CT Cocina & Taqueria has finally opened in Abernathy Square, across the street from Huey Luey's.  I first announced CT back in March and after a few delays, it opened last week.  The Mexican eatery replaced the shuttered Dickey's Barbecue Pit in the Publix-anchored center.

Chipotle Mexican Grill is expected to open two new locations in metro Atlanta in the coming months.  One will be on Camp Creek Parkway at Camp Creek Marketplace. The other will open on GA Hwy 138 in a newly constructed outparcel of the Hobby Lobby-anchored Conyers Crossing shopping center in Conyers.
Regency Centers seems to be grooming Briarcliff Village into a hair-styling mecca. With Empire Beauty School already in a roughly 9,300 square foot space, Salon Lofts is being added to the center in a roughly 8,000 square foot space.  Empire and Salon Lofts together occupy what was previously a La-Z-Boy store. The Salon Lofts space was most recently occupied by defunct retailer Anna's Linens.  In addition to the two large beauty tenants, Supercuts opened at the center earlier this year.

Garden Fresh Restaurant Corporation, the San Diego-based operator of the Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes restaurant chains has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.   Although the company has likely found a buyer in Cortland Capital Market Services LLC, already one of the company's lenders, previously announced plans include the closure of 20 to 30 underperforming locations. In metro Atlanta the company operates four units under the Sweet Tomatoes brand in Kennesaw, Gwinnett, Alpharetta & Sandy Springs.

QuikTrip (QT) has closed their location at Old Canton Road and Roswell Road in East Cobb.  The Tulsa, Oklahoma-based convenience store and gas station operator plans to rebuild the station, originally built in 1990, as a new "Gen III" location.  Gen III QT locations offer a greater variety of food and beverage options via a large store format.  The rebuilt location is expected to open in the first half of next year.  Other Gen III QT locations have opened in Suwanee, Chamblee, Doraville, Sagamore Hills and Kennesaw, and other areas of metro Atlanta.  A gas-less QT opened earlier this summer in midtown with another Gen III expected to open next year on Howell Mill Road.
The new Waffle House in the Kroger-anchored Glenwood Place is officially open.  The new Waffle House is located on Glenwood Avenue in a newly constructed, freestanding building.

I can’t say I'm a big fan, but I did notice a new Waffle House on Lawrenceville Hwy between Jimmy Carter Blvd and Rockbridge Road. Admittedly I don’t frequent this area very much, but this place seemed to pop up overnight.

They are also rebuilding the QT at the corner of Mabry and Hwy 92 in East Cobb as well.

Is Huey Luey's any good? Or is it another place that lives off of margarita sales?
