[UPDATE] Anthropologie to Close at Lenox Square December 29, Reopen Spring 2019

Popular Lenox Square retailer Anthropologie informed customers via email Tuesday that the store would be closing for renovations December 29.  In the email - entitled "BE RIGHT BACK" - the retailer did not specify much about the closure, only saying that they would reopen in the spring.

The women's clothing and accessories retailer, a division of Philadelphia-based Urban Outfitters, Inc., currently occupies a 14,866 square foot space on the mall's second floor near its main Peachtree Road entrance.
"Our Lenox Square Mall store is temporarily closing for renovations starting Saturday, December 29 and will re-open this spring."
The store is currently offering an extra 50% off existing sale merchandise and is also selling a number of fixtures as well as props and furniture.

The store reportedly plans to add restrooms as part of their remodel.

While Anthropologie is closed, local customers can shop the retailer's other Atlanta area locations in Westside Urban Market and Ponce City Market in Atlanta and at Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody.  The company also operates a multi-brand (primarily Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie & Free People merchandise) clearance store called Final Cut, in Augusta.

Real estate sources indicate that while the Anthropologie is renovating, it is also downsizing slightly to allow for the previously reported relocation and expansion of Apple.

ToNeTo Atlanta was first to report in September that Apple was planning to relocate and expand their existing 8,183 square foot store at Lenox Square to a two-level store at the front of the mall.  Plans were filed earlier this month with with the Buckhead Design Review Committee (DRC) seeking a Special Administrative Permit (SAP) for a renovation at the front of Lenox Square for a large, unspecified tenant.

The rendering the accompanies the permit clearly resembles that of an updated Apple store, but reps for Simon have remained mum on the potential move.

Despite inaccurate reporting by other local media, there is nothing to suggest that the new Apple would completely replace the Anthropologie store.  If that happened, the store would triple in size - to 28,574 square feet - and would be one of the largest in the world.  Lenox Square is a big deal, but it ain't that big.

Instead, Apple will likely replace the former Vince Camuto, Karen Millen, Sperry TopSider, Sprinkles and Prime restaurant spaces with a small portion of Anthropologie too.  For its part, Anthropologie will take over three smaller spaces, totaling about 2,400 square feet, currently home to UNTUCKit, Lovesac, and previously, Standard.  UNTUCKit and Lovesac will soon reopen in converted spaces nearby, whereas Standard previously relocated to the upper level of the Luxury Wing.   (As mentioned in September, the former Sperry store is occupied on a short term lease by RAK Outfitters, while a portion of the former Sprinkles space is occupied on a short term lease by Daily Dose, a coffee shop.)

The aforementioned vacant (or soon to be vacant) space totals 15,661 square feet.  Assuming Apple takes about 3,000 square feet from Anthropologie, the electronics retailer would more than double their current size and become a far more eye-catching store with Peachtree Road frontage.

Anthropologie would gain about the same amount of space that it will lose, and remain in the mall, next to Apple, a desirable position for any tenant.

Have you scored any treasures during Anthropologie's closing sale?  Have you ever been to Final Cut? Are you pleased to hear Apple will be opening a larger store at Lenox Square?

The rendering would suggest that the new Apple store isn't taking up the Peachtree-facing width of the Prime/Sprinkles space, which begs the question: What's going in between it and Zinburger?
