Bits & Bites

Henri's Bakery officially opened its fifth overall bakery cafe December 22 in Brookhaven.  The new shop, located at 2163 Johnson Ferry Road, was previously Corner Pizza and before that a Domino's Pizza franchise.  Henri's Brookhaven joins existing outposts in Buckhead, Sandy Springs, Marietta and Upper Westside.

Highland Yoga plans to open two new locations in early 2023, one in Sandy Springs and the other in Brookhaven. The Sandy Springs studio will be in the Kroger-anchored City Walk shopping center and the Brookhaven studio will be at the Porter on Peachtree, a multifamily development along Peachtree Boulevard.  The original Highland Yoga is located on Highland Avenue in Virginia Highland. In addition to the new and original locations, Highland Yoga also has studios in Buckhead, Westside, Decatur and Reynoldstown.  Highland Yoga owner Elspeth Brotherton tells ToNeTo Atlanta that she plans to begin to offer franchises in 2023 with locations "in the works" in Alpharetta and Athens.

26 Thai plans to "soft open" January 24 at Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody.  ToNeTo Atlanta exclusively reported this past May that the Thai eatery would open in the former Varasano's Pizza / Max's Pizzeria space at the front of the mall along Ashford Dunwoody Road.  The new Dunwoody location is the fifth for the Atlanta-based group, joining existing restaurants in Brookhaven, Midtown, Lindbergh and at The Battery Atlanta.

Cathy's, a gourmet ice cream sandwich shop, has closed both its Midtown location on Peachtree Street in the street level of the Viewpoint condo building as well as its West Midtown outpost at Interlock.  The brand's original location, located in The Arcade in Downtown Cleveland, Ohio, is also marked permanently closed online.

Jason's Deli has closed at Buckhead Landing in Buckhead.  ToNeTo Atlanta reported on the planned closure this past March at the same time that we announced the center, then known as Peachtree Piedmont Crossing, was getting its new name.  Jason's Deli, which closed as of December 16, follows the closure of Kroger which ceased operations at the closure of business on December 9.  ToNeTo Atlanta previously reported that the Kroger is being replaced by a new Publix but it remains unclear what may open in place of Jason's Deli.  Following the closure, there are fourteen Jason's Deli locations in Georgia including those in Tucker near Northlake Mall, Midtown near Piedmont Park, Dunwoody not far from Perimeter Mall, and Decatur in North Decatur Station, among others.

Inspire Brands announced December 19 that is has sold Rusty Taco.  The Atlanta-based restaurant franchisor sold the 36 unit taco joint to Gala Capital Partners, a Southern California-based private equity firm.  Rusty Taco was acquired by Inspire in 2018 as part of its acquisition of Buffalo Wild Wings.  Gala currently has stakes in Cicis [pizza], Dunn Brothers Coffee and MOOYAH Burgers, which opened a location in Mableton this past January.  ToNeTo Atlanta reported in November that Rusty Taco is opening at Summerhill Station as part of new Publix-anchored development. The new eatery will be the first actual location for the taco joint in Atlanta.  Alliance Kitchen, a ghost kitchen collective operated by Inspire Brands, opened last fall on Ellsworth Industrial Boulevard in West Midtown and offered menu items from all six Inspire Brands (Buffalo Wild Wings, Arby's, Sonic, Dunkin', Jimmy John's and Rusty Taco.)  Offerings from Rusty Taco as well as Dunkin' are no longer listed on the Alliance Kitchen website.

101 Bagel Cafe is now open at Ashford Place (4780 Ashford Dunwoody Road) in Dunwoody.  The new, roughly 1,800 square foot breakfast joint joins existing Atlanta area locations in Akers Mill, Duluth and East Cobb.  A fifth location is planned for 12060 Crabapple Road in Roswell.

Atlanta Bread on Hammond Drive at Peachtree Dunwoody in the Perimeter Town Center shopping center in Sandy Springs is now open.  The same center welcomed a new El Azteca Mexican restaurant in November.  The new Atlanta Bread marks the return to the area for the Atlanta-based bakery cafe which previously operated a location in the Regal Cinemas-anchored Perimeter Pointe shopping center.

Perc Coffee, a Savannah-based coffee roaster, announced December 22 that it plans to open a new location in Tucker.  The new shop will open along Main Street in a space most recently occupied by The Garden Enthusiast, a gardening tools retailer.  Perc operates existing locations in Savannah, East Lake and Virginia Highland.  While new businesses are no doubt a welcome sight along Main Street (Munster Cravings), a new coffee shop opening when there is already locally owned The Corner Cup literally feet away may not be met with the same enthusiasm as another unrepresented offering might be.

Huey Magoo’s – the “Filet Mignon Of Chicken®”– celebrated its newest franchise store with a grand opening December 21 in Flowery Branch.  The new Huey Magoo’s Flowery Branch - 7310 Spout Springs Road - marks the 40th restaurant opening system-wide across seven states.  The Orlando-based chain has reportedly sold more than 225 franchises in 12 states. The 3,500 square foot end cap restaurant is the fourth of up to 25 Huey Magoo’s stores planned for Greater Atlanta, joining existing locations in Loganville, Oakwood and Dacula, in the development deal with franchise group DAD’s Tenders.

Rock ‘N’ Taco  announced December 22 its plans to open a new location at Cumming City Center, a new mixed-use development in Cumming.  The new restaurant is expected to open in September 2023. There is currently one Rock ‘N’ Taco open, on Canton Street in downtown Roswell.  The restaurant opened in November 2019 when it "moved" from Roswell Road in Buckhead.  The chain also previously operated another location along Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.

A new Discount Tire is planned for 6400 and 6410 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.  Representatives from the tire store are going through the zoning process with the City of Sandy Springs as they will need to have the property rezoned to accommodate their plans.  Many years ago La Paz, a Mexican restaurant, operated from 6410 Roswell Road.

Cathy's website is gone too. Another business formed around a seasonal product. Folks, don't do this. That's great that you can make good ice cream. Enjoy it, let your friends enjoy it. Do not turn it into a business.

What you actually mean is “Don’t turn it into a business with high fixed costs like rent.”

Henri's is good, but way too overpriced. One can feed 2 people at Publix for what it costs to feed one at Henri's.

how sad your life must be to only enjoy ice cream in summer ☹

Henri's "was previously Corner Pizza and before that a Domino's Pizza franchise."
Even further back in time, that location was a pharmacy which followed the original business there - a gasoline station.

wow how old you must be to be able to follow that all the way back to the gas station! That whole little five points Brookhaven Viener crossing development goes all the way back to a horse and buggy post office. always wondered what was in the large space that was formerly blockbuster? Also what was in the larger space that is now Walgreens?

Went to Henri’s today and got a burnt sandwich. More training should be required before chatging such high prices for an average sandwich

The LaPaz property has sat vacant for at least 20 years. Good to see something finally going in there. Discount Tire is a worthwhile one; good people at their location in E Cobb.

Which is funny bc apparently they buy their bagels from the grocery store

Henri;s success baffles me. It is not even as good as the Publix bakery. In the meantime, better bakeries are closing locations while this average bakery keeps increasing in size. Average breads. Mediocre donuts. Cookies are OK. petit fours are mediocre and lack any finesse.
