[EXCLUSIVE] "Number One Ice Cream on the Planet" Opening in Metro Atlanta

A new ice cream shop is coming to town!  Handel's Homemade Ice Cream, which got its start in Youngstown, Ohio in 1945, has secured space for its first Atlanta area franchise.  The new Handel's is opening as part a new multi-tenant development at 580 Peachtree Parkway, not far from The Collection at Forsyth in Cumming.

Handel's will occupy an 1,800 square foot endcap space within a multi-tenant project which, as ToNeTo Atlanta previously reported, will also include a new Caribou Coffee.

A guide from National Geographic titled "The 10 Best of Everything" named Handel's its number 1 ice cream [on the planet].

According to its website, Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream is made fresh daily at each store using an abundance of only the best ingredients available.  Local Handel's offer 45 flavors at all times including ice creams, sherbets, sorbets, "Ices" and fat-free/no sugar added options.

We recently visited a Handel's in Palm Springs, California.  As we were not familiar with the brand, we asked to sample two flavors, but were told samples are not offered.  We have since confirmed that is a franchisee specific policy, not a corporate policy, so there is hope that samples will be offered at the new Peachtree Parkway shop.

Independent franchisees of the Canfield, Ohio-based brand currently operate single units in Alabama, Tennessee, and South Carolina and four units in North Carolina, among the chain's presence in the south.  Overall, there are about 120 locations across 11 states.

The company earlier this summer indicated that it is targeting several markets for growth in the years to come with Atlanta being one.  Other markets listed included Greenville, Greensboro, Charlotte, Raleigh/Durham, Knoxville and Birmingham, among others.

Rival ice cream purveyor Bruster's, which was established in Bridgewater, Pennsylvania in 1989, has had franchises in metro Atlanta for more two decades with a presence that today includes more than 25 units across the state.  The company has, however, closed several locations in metro Atlanta over the years including those in greater Decatur, Brookhaven, Duluth and another in Buford that has been "temporarily closed" for more than two years.   Overall, Bruster's has nearly 200 locations in 22 states, Guyana and South Korea.

Have you ever been to Handel's?  What is currently your favorite ice cream shop in metro Atlanta?  What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Please share your thoughts below.

Before our family moved to Georgia we used to get Handels a couple of times a month. My favorite flavor of theirs is the Heavenly Hash... Can't wait for them to be closeby here in Georgia.
