[EXCLUSIVE] Handel's Bringing "The Best Ice Cream on the Planet" to Midtown

A new-to-market ice cream shop has secured a familiar intown location.  Handel's Homemade Ice Cream, which got its start in Youngstown, Ohio in 1945, has signed a lease for a 962 square foot space in the Trader Joe's-anchored Midtown Promenade (931 Monroe Drive), Suite 300.

The new ice cream franchise will open in a space that has twice been the home of a Bruster's Real Ice Cream franchise, in-between which it was home to a Rita's Italian Ice.

The new Handel's is one of at least three opening soon in metro Atlanta, joining other previously revealed locations in Buckhead and Cumming.

A guide from National Geographic titled "The 10 Best of Everything" named Handel's its number 1 ice cream [on the planet].

Jennifer Schuler, most recently CEO of Wetzel's Pretzels, was named CEO of Handel's earlier this month.  She will look to grow Handel's like she did Wetzel's, which under her direction grew from 200 to 350 units.

According to its website, Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream is made fresh daily at each store using an abundance of only the best ingredients available.  Local Handel's offer 45 flavors at all times including ice creams, sherbets, sorbets, "ices" and fat-free/no sugar added options.

We visited a Handel's in Palm Springs, California this past fall.  As we were not familiar with the brand, we asked to sample two flavors, but were told that samples are not offered.  We have since confirmed that is a franchisee-specific policy, not a corporate policy, so there is hope that samples will be offered at the new Atlanta area locations.

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, which has ten locations in metro Atlanta including three along The BeltLine (Krog Street Market, Stoveworks, and Glenwood Park), seems to encourage samples with most employees often eager to supply tastes.

Canfield, Ohio-based Handel's currently has about 130 franchised locations across 13 states with several more, including the Atlanta area units, "coming soon."

Rival ice cream purveyor Bruster's, which was established in Bridgewater, Pennsylvania in 1989, has had franchises in metro Atlanta for more than two decades with a presence that today includes 25 units across metro Atlanta.

Have you ever been to Handel's?  What is currently your favorite ice cream shop in metro Atlanta?  What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Please share your thoughts below.

Really good hard pack ice cream, not loaded with gums and preservatives like Brusters.

As a native of Youngstown, Ohio, I’ve waited 23 years here in Georgia for this announcement! Handel’s is in a league of its own.
