A new kind of eatery is coming soon to the former Sahara Cafe in Chastain Park. Doughnuts + Fries, yes, that's the name, and that's exactly what will be offered at the new business being opened by Thomas and Lisa Morris.
The Morris' live locally in Sandy Springs but have operated a popular sneaker and streetwear boutique LVRG Capitalist, in Snellville since 2016. The new enterprise will mark their first entry into the restaurant world, something they hope will lead to additional locations.
In addition to both classic cake and yeast doughnuts, the eatery will also feature a variety of funnel fries, traditional fries, and sweet potato waffle fries, plus cookies, in addition to coffee from Atlanta's East Pole Coffee Co.
Newly installed signage indicates guests should expect "Doughnuts - Coffee - Fries - Vibes" when Doughnuts+Fries opens in the coming weeks. The slogan is strikingly similar to The Salty's "Donuts Coffee Vibes," but hey, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?
The 1,500 square foot onetime Starbucks has been completely transformed to create a fresh and inviting atmosphere that the Morrises hope will resonate with the local community. In addition to food and drink items, the shop will also feature a curated selection of branded and dessert-themed retail merchandise.
Well aware of the challenges of the restaurant industry and competition in the doughnut and coffee space, the Morrises are confident that their concept will be a welcome addition to the North Buckhead, Chastain Park, and Sandy Springs community with a goal of being a gathering spot for families.
In the immediate area, a franchise of Duck Donuts that opened in Tuxedo Festival in 2017 closed in 2023, and its roughly 1,400 square foot space remains empty. Over in Powers Ferry Square, locally owned Bon Glaze gave up the ghost in 2019 and its space is now home to a franchise of Playa Bowls.
Up the road in Sandy Springs, is a franchise of Sublime Doughnuts that was to have opened in Hammond Exchange in 2016, but never opened. A small format DTO (Drive-Thru Only) Dunkin' opened along Roswell Road in Chastain Park in 2022, but unlike Doughnuts + Fries where doughnuts will be made fresh onsite, Dunkin's are brought in hours before opening from an off-site commissary.
The owners of the popular suburban doughnut shop Dutch Monkey Doughnuts launched a concept similar to Doughnuts +Fries in J ohns Creek, but it has since closed. "The Dutch" featuring both doughnuts and artisanal frites, was to have opened during the first half of 2020, but its opening was delayed by the pandemic, and it opened a year later. The owners ultimately converted the hybrid concept to just Dutch Monkey, but the business closed for good in early 2023.
ToNeTo Atlanta exclusively reported May 28 that Swoozies plans to reopen its store, directly adjacent to Doughnuts + Fries, in the coming weeks.
Are you excited at the prospect of having fresh made doughnuts and a variety of sweet and savory fries available in Chastain Park? What is your favorite doughnut shop? What is your favorite doughnut flavor?

A donut with a side of fries for lunch? Why not, it beats a salad any day of the week.
What's the over and under of this lasting more than a year?
It’s next to the newly reopened Swoozies so they’ll get lots of traffic, I bet they last a long time.
Super excited for this new donut shop to open. I'm always looking for new restaurants in the area to try. Yay!!
