After getting confirmation late Monday that Publix plans to close their twenty year old store at Atlantic Station, we have now also confirmed that the company plans to close their 23 year old store at Shallowford Exchange (2562 Shallowford Road) in Chamblee, too.
The Shallowford Exchange store was one of several in metro Atlanta to open around the same time and be about the same size. A store that was exactly the same size previously closed at the Shops at Buckhead in Woodstock and is today occupied by a Sprouts Farmers Market. Another 28,800 square foot store closed in Sandy Springs at The Prado at the end of 2018 and is today home to Life Time Work.
An identically sized store that anchors Cheshire Square at the edge of Brookhaven remains open. Publix also operates a pair of similarly sized stores in Buckhead at The Block at Phipps (formerly Lenox Marketplace) and West Paces Ferry Shopping Center, both of which serve dynamic and densely populated areas likely insulating them from the danger of closing.
Unlike rival Kroger, which has seemingly been closing more stores than it's opened or planning to open, Publix has for the most part continued to both add new stores and replace older stores with new, larger stores nearby.
Most Publix stores of today are, like Kroger, bigger than they were 20 years ago. Publix has added far more prepared food departments and other enhancements to its stores, with most now measuring at least 48,387 square feet and some, like the so-called "Clublix" store in Buckhead, measuring 54,965 square feet.
Interestingly, an example of the grocer replacing an older store with a smaller Publix actually occurred in nearby Tucker, where the grocer replaced their 56,146 square foot store at The Centre on Hugh Howell with a new 48,300 square foot store at Hugh Howell Marketplace in February 2022.
For its part, Kroger earlier this year closed four stores in metro Atlanta, including those in Atlanta near the Lindbergh MARTA station, Clairmont Road in Brookhaven, Memorial Drive in Decatur, and Douglas Road in Alpharetta.
Publix's planned closure follows the closure this past January of the Regal Cinemas Hollywood 24. The theater first opened in 1999 and occupied a 37 acre property along the northeast expressway between Shallowford Road and Chamblee Tucker Road.
Following its closure on December 27, the next closest Publix will be the 43,454 square foot store at Briarcliff Village (2162 Henderson Mill Road) near Northlake Mall, 2.8 miles away, and the 41,004 square foot Publix at Chamblee Plaza (5534 Peachtree Boulevard), 3.7 miles away.

There's also a similarly sized Publix at Spalding and Holcomb Bridge in Sandy Springs. It's actually the same prototype.

There's also one of these old small stores at 7736 Spalding Drive (Spalding Corners Shopping Center), technically in the extreme panhandle corner of Sandy Springs, though it has a Norcross mailing address and is surrounded by the city of Peachtree Corners.
Nooooo!!! We go to that Publix all the time. It’s the closest to our home and also the most convenient if you need to pick something up on the way or back from somewhere. So sad!
I am very sad to see what neighbors have called for years “Baby Publix” or “Little Publix” on Shallowford Rd. I do most of my shopping there. I wish they were staying. The only consolation would be to have a Trader Joe’s move in that space.
We have loved this "little Publix" since the day it opened! The first manager would greet us at the door, walk the aisles and ask if we needed help finding an item, and gave my sons a drivers license to drive the car/carts! It is a mainstay for the neighborhood. It is proof that not everything has to be supersized or a big box, to serve the clients - it has just what we need! NO PLEASE DON'T CLOSE!
That location is S tier Trader Joe's material, so fingers crossed that works out. It was a handy location but you always had to work around certain things they didn't carry.

Love Baby Publix because it is right near where I live. I hate our local Kroger. I don’t know where I’ll do most of my shopping going forward.
We’ve done 90% of our grocery shopping at this small Publix for the past 20 years. It’s so convenient and easy to get what you need without wasting time navigating endless aisles. This will force longer drives to other stores (and not necessarily expensive Publix), increasing traffic on our already jammed streets. That’s not Publix’s problem, but it’s short-sighted all around. Let’s hope another grocery store moves in. Dekalb County Commissioners, can you help with this?
This is terrible news. I don’t like the bigger stores. This one also serves all the apartments and nearby neighborhoods. I hate that everything is such a long drive to get to. This one is walkable for so many people.
Trader Joe’s could replace Publix in Atlantic Station
I was shopping at either the Toco Hill Publix or the Northlake Publix before discovering the wonderful “Baby Publix.” Since then, it is where I shop 2-3 times a week. Over the years, I have known the names of the bakers, butchers, deli folks (thank you, Catfish Johnny), produce folks, cashiers, baggers, and managers. This makes me very sad. I wish there were a way to protest its closing!!! Where’s a petition?!!!
I hate to see this happen. Most of the time I have better luck finding things here than at the larger Publix. Like many others, I love how convenient it is for our neighborhood.
Yes I go there all the time - their sales volume has to be high for the size!
