After getting confirmation late Monday that Publix plans to close their twenty year old store at Atlantic Station, we have now also confirmed that the company plans to close their 23 year old store at Shallowford Exchange (2562 Shallowford Road) in Chamblee, too.
The Shallowford Exchange store was one of several in metro Atlanta to open around the same time and be about the same size. A store that was exactly the same size previously closed at the Shops at Buckhead in Woodstock and is today occupied by a Sprouts Farmers Market. Another 28,800 square foot store closed in Sandy Springs at The Prado at the end of 2018 and is today home to Life Time Work.
An identically sized store that anchors Cheshire Square at the edge of Brookhaven remains open. Publix also operates a pair of similarly sized stores in Buckhead at The Block at Phipps (formerly Lenox Marketplace) and West Paces Ferry Shopping Center, both of which serve dynamic and densely populated areas likely insulating them from the danger of closing.
Unlike rival Kroger, which has seemingly been closing more stores than it's opened or planning to open, Publix has for the most part continued to both add new stores and replace older stores with new, larger stores nearby.
Most Publix stores of today are, like Kroger, bigger than they were 20 years ago. Publix has added far more prepared food departments and other enhancements to its stores, with most now measuring at least 48,387 square feet and some, like the so-called "Clublix" store in Buckhead, measuring 54,965 square feet.
Interestingly, an example of the grocer replacing an older store with a smaller Publix actually occurred in nearby Tucker, where the grocer replaced their 56,146 square foot store at The Centre on Hugh Howell with a new 48,300 square foot store at Hugh Howell Marketplace in February 2022.
For its part, Kroger earlier this year closed four stores in metro Atlanta, including those in Atlanta near the Lindbergh MARTA station, Clairmont Road in Brookhaven, Memorial Drive in Decatur, and Douglas Road in Alpharetta.
Publix's planned closure follows the closure this past January of the Regal Cinemas Hollywood 24. The theater first opened in 1999 and occupied a 37 acre property along the northeast expressway between Shallowford Road and Chamblee Tucker Road.
Following its closure on December 27, the next closest Publix will be the 43,454 square foot store at Briarcliff Village (2162 Henderson Mill Road) near Northlake Mall, 2.8 miles away, and the 41,004 square foot Publix at Chamblee Plaza (5534 Peachtree Boulevard), 3.7 miles away.
Are you surprised to see Publix close its store at Shallowford Exchange? Where do you do the majority of your grocery shopping? What would you most like to see replace Publix when it closes?

There's also a similarly sized Publix at Spalding and Holcomb Bridge in Sandy Springs. It's actually the same prototype.
Don’t they also have a small format store at 1100 Hammond Dr Ste 300, Sandy Springs, GA 30328? I wonder how long it has before it gets closed in this purge of small format stores.

There's also one of these old small stores at 7736 Spalding Drive (Spalding Corners Shopping Center), technically in the extreme panhandle corner of Sandy Springs, though it has a Norcross mailing address and is surrounded by the city of Peachtree Corners.
Nooooo!!! We go to that Publix all the time. It’s the closest to our home and also the most convenient if you need to pick something up on the way or back from somewhere. So sad!
I am very sad to see what neighbors have called for years “Baby Publix” or “Little Publix” on Shallowford Rd. I do most of my shopping there. I wish they were staying. The only consolation would be to have a Trader Joe’s move in that space.
We have loved this "little Publix" since the day it opened! The first manager would greet us at the door, walk the aisles and ask if we needed help finding an item, and gave my sons a drivers license to drive the car/carts! It is a mainstay for the neighborhood. It is proof that not everything has to be supersized or a big box, to serve the clients - it has just what we need! NO PLEASE DON'T CLOSE!
That location is S tier Trader Joe's material, so fingers crossed that works out. It was a handy location but you always had to work around certain things they didn't carry.
Same! This was my "go to" on my way home from work.
Love Baby Publix because it is right near where I live. I hate our local Kroger. I don’t know where I’ll do most of my shopping going forward.
We’ve done 90% of our grocery shopping at this small Publix for the past 20 years. It’s so convenient and easy to get what you need without wasting time navigating endless aisles. This will force longer drives to other stores (and not necessarily expensive Publix), increasing traffic on our already jammed streets. That’s not Publix’s problem, but it’s short-sighted all around. Let’s hope another grocery store moves in. Dekalb County Commissioners, can you help with this?
This is terrible news. I don’t like the bigger stores. This one also serves all the apartments and nearby neighborhoods. I hate that everything is such a long drive to get to. This one is walkable for so many people.
Trader Joe’s could replace Publix in Atlantic Station
I was shopping at either the Toco Hill Publix or the Northlake Publix before discovering the wonderful “Baby Publix.” Since then, it is where I shop 2-3 times a week. Over the years, I have known the names of the bakers, butchers, deli folks (thank you, Catfish Johnny), produce folks, cashiers, baggers, and managers. This makes me very sad. I wish there were a way to protest its closing!!! Where’s a petition?!!!
I hate to see this happen. Most of the time I have better luck finding things here than at the larger Publix. Like many others, I love how convenient it is for our neighborhood.
Yes I go there all the time - their sales volume has to be high for the size!
Such a shame. My favorite Publix. It is so well run and have such a great selection of products in a small footprint. So convenient to the highway if you want to grab something quick on the way home or on your way somewhere. They always have enough cashiers so you can be in and out in 10 mins. Everyone is so nice there, too! So clean and inviting. No Shallowfor Publix! Don’t go!
No!!! This is our primary grocery store!
I don't understand this store closing. It's got to do a good business and is much needed. It's my favorite Publix. I live half a mile from the Briarcliff Village Publix and 2 miles from this Shallowford Baby Publix. I much rather go to the Baby Publix. I'm so disappointed in Publix for closing this store. I like the Briarcliff Village Publix but their parking lot is frustrating. I've been thinking of giving Aldi a try so I guess now is the time for that.
This has been our primary grocery for 20+ years for main shopping and running in for a forgotten item. It will be a loss for the area.
Correct, it’s in Sandy Springs city limits surrounded on the north and west ends by Sandy Springs and Peachtree Corners on the east and south side. In regards to the mailing address, I have already reached out to Sandy Springs city leaders to work with Publix to change it to “Sandy Springs” from Norcross to prevent confusion.
Seems short-sighted considering the residential development being discussed to replace Regal Movie Theatre.
Sad. That Publix is on my way home from work, with home being near the Cheshire Bridge store. I am at both stores a couple times a week. The smaller size is fast and easy to work with. That said, I have never seen Shallowford busy. Ever. Cheshire Bridge is quite busy at times and very much beloved by everybody in the area. I hope it doesnt close, too.
I'm so mad at Publix for closing this store. It's a great store, many people walk to it and it seems to do a great business. It's a perfect fit for this little shopping center.
Difficult parking lot, great for sandwiches and deli. Why?
How could you possibly call that area Chamblee?
Definitely Trader Joe’s would be great there!
I wish Kroger would fix both stores in Tucker. The one on Lville Hwy is a real mess but it has loads of space if they fix the inside, now is awful inside. The one on LaVista by Northlake mall is a complete disaster.
I used to live in the area and shopped at that Publix several times a week. It’s so convenient to the homeowners as well as renters in that area. I’m sorry to hear that it’s closing.
Glad it is going away, Stopped going years ago Parking lot is difficult, Deli personel slow and with attitude. Northlake or Toco Hills Publix much better
Not my primary but soooo convenient right off the highway. Other comments were hoping for Trader Joes but this is a better match for Aldi.
Oh man! Time to move! @🤣
Makes me wonder if the small Publixes in Atlanta of Cheshire Bridge and Piedmont Ave are next up
Horrible parking but a very heavily populated area. I wish the focus would have been on making the area more walkable. Perfect store for a walkable community. I lived in the area when I first moved to Georgia and that was my Publix. I made the mistake of thinking I could walk there but found there were no sidewalks from my apartment complex.
Devastated. We shop there all the time.
Not the right demographics for a Trader Joes
Um, Chamblee is literally starts about 350 yards from there
Does anyone know if the Publix in Midtown Atlanta off Piedmont Ave near North Avenue Station is a 27M type store?
Can we sign a petition to keep it? How do we communicate this to Publix that it needs to stay!!!!
You sure it isn't the right demographic for Trader Joes? Oak Grove and Embry Hills seem like they would shop there even if areas around DECA might be more likely to shop at places on Buford instead.
We need to keep this Publix! It is so convenient. I do all my shopping there
Kroger and Publix was where I shopped depending on the time of day. I live between Buford Highway and Shallowford Road, now both of my groceries options are no longer accessible. What a shame! Bring somebody in that's going to be a part of the community
Seems to me Atlanta 30345, Oak Grove and Henderson Mill would be a good demographic for a Trader Joe’s
The only time I have ever seen Publix close a store without replacing it was due to excessive shoplifting.
I don't mean to be rude or a pessimist - just a realist. Trader Joe's isn't coming. As for the person who is happy it's closing because they don't like that store. HUH???? Such an odd comment. You make it seem like something shiny and new will be replacing that Publix. It won't be. It'll probably sit empty for months or years. I'll never comprehend the happiness people get from businesses closing up and people losing their jobs.
I am also very disappointed In the closing of the Shallowford store . it is very close to me and I shop there all the time. I know a lot of my neighbors do too. It is really not convenient to go to Chamblee and Northlake is further . It will be more Convenient just to go to Kroger‘s. I can’t believe the store was not making enough money because every time I go in there there certainly are a lot of people.
I agree that all the people in the store are always friendly and helpful if you call and ask them if they have an item they actually answer the phone and they will look for the item and tell you what aisle it is on. If you like, they will pull the item if it is something they can have out and you can pick it up at customer service. The Store is-unlike any other stores in my area. I am very disappointed to see it close. Wish I knew the reasoning behind decision.
Then you never lived in Florida. They do it all the time.
We’ve shopped at our little Publix since it opened. We are not happy about this at all! My husband loves that he can stop by on his way home for extras, too.
It’s so convenient for me and has everything I need.
I hate going to the Northlake Publix. That parking lot is like trying to drive through a demolition derby and it takes forever to get through that store!
It's defintely not Chamblee.i live in the area. We are still unincorporated Dekalb. I wouldn't mind being annexed by Brookhaven. I've discussed this with Brookhaven's government. They are open to our if 60% of the residents agree.
My thoughts EXACTLY!!
It's the closest to me but they have others in the area just not as convenient and in Atlanta Traffic Convenience is EVERYTHING!! SO SAD!! I'D LOVE TO SEE A TRADER JOE'S THERE!!!!
I doubt that store will EVER CLOSE!! Always INSANELY BUSY and in a HOT AREA bordering Dunwoody and Sandy Springs!! Nothing with that SELECTION AND VARIETY NEARBY!!
The Newish Ashford Dunwoody Store was originally designed as a Greenwise Store so the selection and variety is LESS THAN THAT OLDER STORE ON HAMMOND even if the square footage is slightly more!!!!
You need to break out a map. That Publix is not in Chamblee. It is in unincorporated DeKalb county.
I talked to Chamblee’s government and they said no.
No
The government said.
Yes, that store is a 27M and opened in 2001. Check out my page on Publix layouts if you are curious about other stores.
too many urban thugs in close proximity
I was in there the other day and some shady character was trying to use a stolen credit card and reeked of weed
yep the one in Lavista is rightly called Creepy Kroger.
This is a GREAT Publix! The location is perfect for so many neighborhoods. This seems like a terrible idea. Unless, as some have said, we get a Trader Joe’s to replace it, please reconsider!!! (And please DON’T make it a Sprouts!) ☹️☹️☹️
That’s unincorporate Dekalb Co. Walkabikity wont happen.
Chamblee’s city limits are on the opposite side of 85 over by Pius
Make it a Lidl
This has been my grocery store since it opened in the late ‘90s. Staff excellent and selection is great. I rarely shop anywhere else. I hope Publix will reconsider - I’m not interested in their larger stores.
Hopefully they are reading this and will rethink it. If not though, I’m sure we’ll get something good in its place.
To all those wanting a Trader Joes - the parking lot is a total mess NOW even on non-busy days. Make sure your insurance is up-to-date.
