Once renovated, the reopened Checkers should look like this |
Checkers to reopen closed location
Tampa, Florida-based Checkers plans to reopen their shuttered restaurant at the corner of North Druid Hills Road and Lawrenceville Highway near North DeKalb Mall. The restaurant closed in 2011 and there had been talk that the neighboring Drive-Thru-only Chick-fil-A might purchase the property to build a full service location. That plan never materialized.
Checkers has begun the planning and permitting process and given that the building already exists, they could be open relatively quickly should everything go as planned. The first of three planned development meetings is planned for October 14th.
If approved, this would mark the first new-ish Checkers to open in metro Atlanta in many years.
Checkers has closed a number of locations over the past few years including three intown locations.
In Chamblee, a former Checkers was to be demolished and rebuilt as a Popeyes but the chicken chain could never get the necessary zoning approvals and has since abandoned their plans. Another shuttered Checkers in Brookhaven recently reopened as a Smoothie King. Another Checkers opened for a short time on Broad Street near Georgia State but has since closed and is today "It's Greek to Us."
A Checkers in midtown on Spring Street is likely to soon be displaced by planned vertical development.
Will you welcome the re-opening of Checkers? Do you wish Chick-fil-A has expanded into the Checkers space as some had hoped? Were you rooting for a Chick-fil-A to open in place of Checkers?

I was kind of secretly hoping that the proposed Dunkin Donuts might have a second chance at that spot after the first idea of taking over the old bank up the street got killed...partially by NIMBYism... #ButThatsNoneOfMyBusiness
The Checkers turned Smoothie King is actually in Brookhaven.
It's Greek to Us has opened a second location in Marietta, near Kennestone Hospital in the old Qubie's Subs place. Like the one downtown, they're proud about serving Pepsi.
The former Checkers never had steady business. Cookout would've been a better fit.
..there is a new Checkers prototype out that features only 1 drive thru window, while the other side is covered seating.
I like Checkers.
Noooo the checkers in midtown off spring st. is going to close?!?! Thats awful, its such a good place to go after leaving the bar/clubs for a late night munchies!
Love that it's coming back but would have preferred Popeyes! That section of NDH is a cluster schmuck of traffic from the Chevron to the intersection already...Dekalb seriously needs to get the lights in sync.
