Baldino's Giant Jersey Subs has closed its Marietta location at 80 Powers Ferry Road, not far from the big chicken. The closure took place in November but was recently brought to our attention by a loyal reader in the area. ToNeTo Atlanta visited the restaurant earlier this week and found signage posted to the door that indicated that the restaurant's owners were unsuccessful in reaching a deal with the center's landlord to keep them in their location which has been in business since 1984.
Akers Mill Square is slated to welcome several new tenants. Updated leasing materials indicate that Coastal States Bank will open in the 3,800 foot former bank property at 2841 Akers Mill Road. The Hilton Head Island-based bank entered the metro Atlanta market in 2021 with branches in Alpharetta and Sandy Springs. Bank of North Georgia, and later Synovus, most recently occupied the bank building, but it has been vacant for several years.
In addition to Coastal States Bank, Ashley HomeStore is also set to join the center when it opens in the 38,830 square foot former Golfsmith space. The junior anchor box has been vacant since the golf retailer filed for bankruptcy and later closed its stores in 2016. Arcadia, Wisconsin-based Ashley currently has 27 locations in Georgia, the majority of which are not in metro Atlanta.
Kid Cashew made its metro Atlanta debut with the opening of their new restaurant on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs. The restaurant, located at 6090 Roswell Road, replaced a onetime Moe's Southwest Grill in a freestanding building just north of Hammond Drive. ToNeTo Atlanta was first to report on the restaurant's planned opening in March 2021. The full-service restaurant features a Mediterranean inspired menu serving lunch and dinner, and soon, weekend brunch. The Sandy Springs locations marks the third overall Kid Cashew. The original Kid Cashew opened in the Charlotte neighborhood of Dilworth in early 2016. A second Kid Cashew opened in the Charleston suburb of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, in late 2018.
Studio Movie Grill has opened its new Alpharetta North Point location. "SMG North Point" is located on North Point Parkway near North Point Mall and features nearly 1,300 luxury lounge chairs and recliners in 14 auditoriums outfitted with the latest digital projection, Dolby 3D, Q-SYS custom sound systems, as well as a full-service bar and lounge and made-to-order American Grill menu. The new location replaces the former AMC Mansell Crossing 14 and itself serves as a relocation or sorts for the Studio Movie Grill on Holcomb Bridge in Alpharetta which closed in 2021. The North Point theater has been in the works since 2019 but was delayed first by the pandemic, and later in 2020 by the company's bankruptcy filing. In addition to the new North Point location, the Dallas, Texas-based cinema operator has two other metro Atlanta locations in Duluth and Marietta.
Cottonwood Heights, Utah-based Extra Space Storage in February purchased a total of nine self storage facilities from Atlanta-based The Space Shop including those on Clairmont Road in Chamblee and Lenox Road at Buford Highway in Buckhead, among four in Georgia. The purchase - split between two transactions - totaled $137M. Following the sale, The Space Shop operates just six facilities in metro Atlanta with a seventh coming soon to Marietta where the company plans to convert the former Park 12 Cinemas, and an eighth coming to Buford Highway in Duluth. Extra Space Storage, the number two biggest self-storage operator in the country with over 2,100 locations, now has more than 100 locations in Georgia including THREE less than a mile apart near Lindbergh: 1085 Lindbergh Drive, 2489 Cheshire Bridge Road and now 2531 Lenox Road.
Dallas, Texas-based DECA Dental Group is entering the Atlanta market with a practice planned for Buckhead. The new DECA will open at Buckhead Exchange, a shopping center at the corner of Grandview Avenue and Peachtree Road already home to Sephora, Dancing Goats, Storico Fresco and Tootsies, among other tenants. According to an updated property site plan, DECA has leased the roughly 2,500 square foot Peachtree facing space once leased to YEAH! Burger, which never opened.
Amazon announced Wednesday its plans to close 68 retail stores. The closures include all of its Amazon Books physical bookstores, as well as its Amazon 4-star and Amazon Pop Up shops. Closure dates will vary by location. In metro Atlanta, where the company has previously operated several pop-up shops, the only store that seems slated for the closure is the Amazon 4-star store on the second floor of Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody. The roughly 5,000 square foot store opened in 2020. According to Amazon, the closures will allow the company to focus on its other physical retail efforts, including its Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods, and Amazon Go cashierless grocery stores, as well as its recently launched apparel shop, Amazon Style.
The owners of local Malaysian restaurant Food Terminal plan to open their new Alpharetta restaurant on North Point Parkway Tuesday March 8. The new, roughly 6,000 square foot restaurant located in an outparcel of North Point Marketcenter, replaces Fuddruckers which closed in 2019. The new Alpharetta Food Terminal [6360 North Point Parkway] is the third for the locally owned chain and joins existing locations in Chamblee and in West Midtown. In addition to the Alpharetta expansion, other Food Terminal restaurants are planned for Aria Village off Abernathy Road in Sandy Springs and off Barrett Parkway in Barrett Pavilion in Kennesaw.

I went into the Amazon store at Perimeter a few weeks ago. I wasn't that impressed with the store. I thought the layout of the store was crowded and just not that appealing. Being a person that still likes malls I hate that this causes another empty store front.
I'll miss the Amazon 4 star in Perimeter Mall, but only because it was a close option for many small item returns.
I remember eating at Baldino's in Augusta and out on Buford Hwy. They had the best subs in town, hands down. Sorry to hear of this closure.
I'm another Baldinos fan. Despite growing up in Atlanta, I didn't discover it until about 7-8 years ago, but have regularly visited the Buford Hwy location ever since.
This Baldino's used to be very good, but hasn't been in at least 4 years. I'm surprised it lasted this long. Still sad though. Under the old ownership, the food was generally good and the prices were very fair.
I’m thinking that the landlord isn’t a real deep thinker for letting Baldinos get away from them. Anybody know how long Baldinos was there? Seems like 20+ years. Landlords never learn. I had a business where they wanted to more than triple my rent and I shut it down. It took them six years to finally get it leased again for 20% above what I had been paying. I would have taken that deal. Landlords! Gotta luv em!
