[ALERT] Seven More Del Taco Restaurants Close in Georgia

Del Taco has quietly closed at least three more of its greater metro Atlanta locations.  The closures are likely the result of a recent bankruptcy filing by Matador Restaurant Group, one of the chain's franchisees.

Greenville, South Carolina-based Matador operates 22 Del Taco restaurants in Georgia and Alabama and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 16.

The latest closures include the following Del Taco restaurants: 745 Chastain Road in Kennesaw, 9775 GA 92 in Woodstock and 6705 Jonesboro Road in Morrow.

ToNeTo Atlanta contacted Del Taco's public relations firm, Champion Management, with questions regarding the closures and if there were others in metro Atlanta.

The company ultimately supplied this statement:

"Del Taco is aware that one of its franchisees with locations in Georgia recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.   The Company is actively working with the franchisee and within the bankruptcy proceeding to help support continued operations at the impacted restaurants while the franchisee’s reorganization efforts proceed."

Despite this, signage at the three locations ToNeTo Atlanta readers visited indicates the restaurants are permanently closed.  The company also did not answer and it remains unclear if there were other Del Taco closures in metro Atlanta. (Online research suggests that Del Taco restaurants in Hiram (4495 Jimmy Lee Smith Parkway), McDonough (1535 Hwy 20 W), Riverdale (6791 GA-85) and Conyers ( 1714 Highway 138) have also closed.

According to the Del Taco website, there are currently twenty Del Taco restaurants in Georgia but their list includes all six of the aforementioned closed stores.  Among the Georgia restaurants that remain open are those in Tucker, Smyrna, Lawrenceville, Snellville and Gainesville.

A separate Del Taco in Kennesaw closed in May.  The corporately owned restaurant, located near the intersection of Barrett Parkway and Cobb Parkway in an outparcel of Kennesaw Marketplace, opened along with the Whole Foods in what was then a new center in 2017.  Another Del Taco at 109 Banks Road in Fayetteville also closed earlier this year.

The new closures mark at least ten in metro Atlanta in recent years for the Lake Forest, California-based chain.  The chain previously shuttered units in Buford, Milton, East Cobb and Loganville.  The company in late 2019 closed a unit along Mansell Road in Roswell after only nine months in business.

Related: Summit Restaurant Holdings closed more than a dozen Hardee's restaurants in Georgia in April 2023 ahead of  their own Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

Del Taco was acquired by rival chain Jack in the Box for $585 million in early 2022 but the marriage of the two fast food brands has not gone well with the burger company announcing this past April that they are exploring “strategic alternatives” for Del Taco, potentially including a sale.  The company indicated in May that they have received "strong buyer interest ahead of official sale process."

Update 8/8: This post has been updated to include the closure of the Del Taco in Riverdale.

Update 8/9: This post has been updated to include the closure of the Del Taco in McDonough.  The Del Taco website has also been updated to indicate there are fourteen restaurants in Georgia.  The list now excludes all but the Kennesaw restaurant which it suggests is open.

Are you surprised that Del Taco closed so many Georgia restaurants?  What would you like to see open in place of the newly shuttered Del Taco restaurants?  What is your favorite quick serve Mexican chain?

I really enjoy their food but the nearest one never has anyone else in there when we go. I really don't know how they manage to stay open.

The Del Taco in Woodstock was terribly staffed and managed. People stopped going there not because of the food but because of the service. It could easily take 30 minutes to get your food even if they were not busy.

Dang it! I wish they would grow and reopen another location in East Cobb. Hopefully that overpriced 5 guys will close down soon and maybe they can reopen in the old location LoL. 🤞

Since you hate the comments so much, why do you come on the site? Do you think your complaining makes it any better?

The Del Taco in Morrow, Georgia is boarded up, and Google lists them as permanently closed.
