[SOLD] Longtime Patron, Decatur Resident Acquires Raging Burrito

Decatur's Raging Burrito, a mainstay in the area since 1996, has a new owner.  The casual eatery, which was listed for sale by owner and founder Scott Herman in October, officially sold Monday, according to a post by Steve Josovitz of The Shumacher Group, the local brokerage firm that had marketed the business for sale.

Longtime patron and area resident Ben Kori is the new owner according to Josovitz.

The 4,800 square foot restaurant is located on the Decatur Square at 141 Sycamore Street (back patio entrance) and 320 Church Street.  According to the sales listing, the restaurant features 150 seats, 20 bar seats, and an outdoor patio that seats an additional 130.

More than two decades ago there was a second Raging Burrito at 1529 Piedmont Avenue near Ansley Mall, but the Decatur location is currently the only location in operation.  That said, the sales listing stated: "Incredible multi unit franchised or licensing potential can take brand Nationally."  The listing also suggested  "Adding Saturday & Sunday breakfast burritos/brunch can increase revenues."

The restaurant was offered at $950,000.  It's unclear what the ultimate sales price was and ToNeTo Atlanta has thus far been unable to speak to Kori regarding his plans for the brand and the Decatur restaurant.

Herman, who is selling the business to retire, has stated on several occasions that he intended to be selective in who to sell to and wanted to ensure the "right" buyer would continue to serve the community and "carry on our 29 year tradition."

Josovitz, who has been brokering restaurant transactions in and around Georgia for more than 30 years, is no stranger to significant sales.

Last September Josovitz brokered the sale of The Colonnade, an Atlanta landmark restaurant for nearly a century.  The buyers, Lewis Jeffries and his husband Paul Donahue, have breathed new life into the storied restaurant, brought back a few menu favorites, extended hours, and are planning a special celebration in 2027 to commemorate the restaurant's 100th birthday.

Elsewhere in Atlanta, Eats owner Bob Hatcher elected to close rather than sell his popular Ponce de Leon eatery in October after 32 years in business.  Hatcher, who also owned the real estate his restaurant occupied, plans to sell the property and treat it as his retirement, likely realizing a far greater (and more immediate) return than he could playing landlord.

Another iconic Atlanta restaurant, R. Thomas, also changed hands in recent weeks.  The healthy eatery which held court along Peachtree Street in Brookwood Hills since 1985, was sold to a "hospitality group" mostly known for operating hookah lounges in Atlanta and Charlotte.  The group told The AJC at the time of the October closing that they planned only minor cosmetic changes to the restaurant in the short term.

What do you like most about Raging Burrito?  What would you like to see Kori do to enhance the experience at Raging Burrito?  What is your favorite longtime Atlanta area eatery?
