The owner of City Bagel and Cafe has rebranded as New York Best Bagels. Mac Abdallah first opened City Bagel, featuring New York-style kettle boiled bagels, in September 2019 and in recent weeks has debuted the new name at the original location at 334 Sandy Springs Circle.
The new concept has a nearly nonexistent online presence, but when we stopped in, we were told that the main difference in the new concept - beyond a renovation - is that a wider variety of food items have been added to the cafe menu. That said, the Sandy Springs location is the larger of the two and may have the capacity to offer a slightly larger menu.
In East Cobb, the new shop will, like 101 Bagel before it, face formidable competition from the likes of longstanding neighborhood favorite Bagelicious as well as Goldberg's.
Bagels are undoubtedly having a moment, with chains like Jeff's Bagel Run, PopUp Bagels, and Spread Bagelry all opening new locations in metro Atlanta in recent months and still more in the immediate pipeline.
Local operators are also in growth mode with The Bagel Hole having celebrated the grand opening of its fifth location August 31 on Browns Bridge Road in Cumming. Dish's Bagels, another new shop, has been delayed, but is looking to open in October at AMLI Brookhaven near Villa Christina in Brookhaven.
Abdallah's daughter Lena has also gotten in on the bagel business. Lena, along with husband Ahmad Nashif, opened Yaba's Bagels in Dunwoody's Ashford Place shopping center in June 2025, where it, too, replaced a former 101 Bagel Cafe.
