[EXCLUSIVE] New Sandwich Shop Out to Rescue Space Left Vacant By Sudden Donut Closure

A locally owned sandwich shop is planning to open a second area location early next year.  Hero Boy Sandwich Co., which debuted its first and currently only location at 1055 Mansell Road in Alpharetta in September 2023, has leased a space in Buckhead's Chastain Square for its second location.

The new Hero Boy will be located in a 1,500 square foot space within the Publix-anchored center (4285 Roswell Road) between existing tenants Supercuts and Swoozies.  Local treat shop Doughnuts+Fries occupied the space for about eleven months before closing this past May.  Before that, it was home to Sahara Mediterranean Cafe for about four years, and before that, Starbucks, before the coffee chain relocated up the road to a freestanding building.

Business partners Michael Giovine, Brad Kranz, and Greg Abel joined forces to open the first Hero Boy.  Ironically, their first location was also a former donut shop - The Donut Shack.  Giovine, the "restaurant guy" of the trio, is no stranger to the Chastain area as he is the owner of Wing Factory, a tenant in Chastain Square for nearly thirty years.

(Hero Boy is in no way related to Hero Doughnuts/Hero Diner which closed all locations, including one in Summerhill, this past April.)

Hero Boy features assorted hot and cold Italian Hero and Philly sandwiches such as chipotle chicken salad, veggie delight, meatball parm, chicken parm, and a Philly cheesesteak, as well as salads, Sicilian Arancini (fried risotto balls) and waffle fries, among other offerings.

The existing location is open seven days a week from 11am until 4pm.  The new Buckhead location will adopt evening hours until 7 or 8 pm, depending on traffic.  Plans call for the new location to open in early 2027, pending permitting and construction.

Have you been to Hero Boy Sandwich?  Are you excited for the opening of Hero Boy in Chastain Park?  If Hero Boy continues to expand, where would you like to see them open next?

Bold move to open a sandwich shop next to Publix which will surely have better and cheaper subs than this place. And Publix won't spin that iPad around at me to "answer some questions"

Your a Gem. Ha

Cheaper yes, better not so sure.

Give them a chance. It's one of the best subs I've had...ever. Pub Subs are good, but they aren't this either. Next level good.

They spin that thing around at me and I'll walk out. (but you are absolutely right)

Excellent sandwiches. The only drawback is the hours. They’ll do well in Buckhead. Glad hours will be extended. Quality stuff.

I've been to their Alpharetta location. Hero Boy's subs are lightyears ahead of pub subs.

Publix subs are the most overrated thing ever. They haven’t been good in 15 years.

Pub subs are a good value but they aren't great. The way they cut the bread and pile the meat and toppings into it like its a half-pipe makes it hard to eat without all the veggies falling out. The bread can also be kind of hard for a sub, Plus, it can take forever to get one if there's a line.

Exactly. Rock hard bread and the stuff falls out

Failed basic English, didn't you?

And they use a kit to make their sandwiches, instead of slicing the meat for each sandwich individually. If you remove an item from the kit, like if you order an Ultimate sub but remove the roast beef, then they upcharge you.

Wait! So people are now so anti computers that take orders? You don't need to give a tip. I mean isn't a blank space on your receipt the same thing as an ipad that you can click a tip? Some people just need to be angry at something.
