[CLOSURE ALERT] Bed Bath & Beyond Saying Bye Bye to Buckhead

Bed Bath & Beyond, the beleaguered retailer that is seemingly on the verge of bankruptcy, will be closing at least one more Atlanta area store.  The Bed Bath & Beyond at Buckhead Station shopping center (1 Buckhead Loop) started liquidation sales Saturday, offering all in-stock merchandise for 20 per cent off.  The sale is slated to run for several weeks and end when all inventory is sold.

[OPENING ALERT] Indian Grocer to Make Highly Anticipated Debut

Patel Brothers, an Indian oriented grocery store and market, will celebrate the grand opening of its third Atlanta area location today, January 26, in Kennsaw.  ToNeTo Atlanta exclusively reported on the planned opening more than a year ago at which time the store was expected to open this past fall.  It's unclear what led to the delay but based on questions and comments we've fielded from readers, it's clear that the community is eager for the store to open.

[EXCLUSIVE] Lidl Leaving Another Atlanta Area Location

For the second time in less than a year, Lidl is closing a metro Atlanta store.  Store employees were informed Monday that Lidl in Dunwoody will close as of February 6 19.  The roughly 33,000 square foot store, located at 2480 Mount Vernon Highway, opened August 26, 2020 in place of what had most recently been a Sprouts Farmers Market.  

[UPDATE] Wahlburgers Quietly Closed its Downtown Atlanta Restaurant

Less than three years after opening, Wahlburgers has closed their downtown Atlanta restaurant.   Located at 218 Peachtree Street, Wahlburgers opened their downtown outpost in January 2020 just two months before the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the restaurant industry.   The Wahlburgers shared a portion of the onetime Planet Hollywood with a Chase Bank that remains open.  The company did not reveal the reason for the closure.  

[UPDATE] Popular Burger Chain Drops Pepsi for Coke

Culver's, the Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin-based chain known for their ButterBurgers and cheese curds, is in now in the news for another reason.  The company announced in recent days that it will soon drop Pepsi products from their restaurants in favor of beverages from The Coca-Cola Company.  

[EXCLUSIVE] Whataburger's Woodstock Restaurant to Begin Drive-Thru Service This Week

A source close to the growing chain tells ToNeTo Atlanta that the drive-thru at the new Whataburger in Woodstock will open this coming Thursday morning, January 26,  at 11AM!  The new restaurant, located at 9766 GA-92, opens in place of a medical facility, adjacent to where Chick-fil-A completely rebuilt (and renamed) their former Dwarf House, now Truett's Chick-fil-A, in October 2021.  The new Woodstock location marks the second Whataburger in metro Atlanta for the San Antonio-based chain.

[UPDATE] Walmart to Reopen but Downsize Vine City Store, Permanently Close on Howell Mill

The Walmart store at The District at Howell Mill is now permanently closed, according to a release from the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer.  Walmart opened its 150,000 square foot store at the roughly 16 acre project in 2006 and served as its anchor alongside junior anchors including TJ Maxx, Office Depot, ULTA, and HomeGoods, among others.  Atlanta-based Selig Enterprises developed the center but in 2007 sold the majority of their interest in it.

Bits & Bites

Postino WineCafé  will open its second Atlanta area restaurant Monday January 23 at Brickworks Atlanta (1000 Marietta Street) in West Midtown.  The opening follows the debut of the Arizona-based chain in Atlanta this past September when they opened at Tuxedo Festival near Chastain Park.  The chain likes to honor prior tenants of spaces they occupy, with a video tape wall in Buckhead in homage to the Blockbuster Video that occupied it before, and a wall of retro Matchbox cars in West Midtown, an allusion to the space's prior use as a Ford Motor Car dealership.

[CLOSURE ALERT] Intown Athletic Club Closing After More than Four Decades

Athletic Club Northeast, an intown Atlanta mainstay for more than four decades, announced Wednesday that it's closing for good.  The club, located between Briarcliff and Cheshire Bridge Roads at 1515 Sheridan Road, has been in business since 1978, according to online records.  The club did not provide a reason for the closure, only that it will close permanently as of January 31, 2023.

[ALERT] In-N-Out Expanding East, Will Open in Nashville

First there was Whataburger, soon there will be Raising Cane's...could In-N-Out Burger be next?  In a surprise move, In-N-Out, which in all its existence has never expanded further east than Texas, announced plans to enter the Nashville area by 2026!  The company plans to establish an "Eastern territory" office in the Nashville suburb of Franklin.  The company did not reveal how many locations it plans to open, but an "eastern territory" definitely suggests more than just the Nashville/Tennessee area.

[UPDATE] Nur Kitchen to Reopen as Kosher Restaurant

Nur Kitchen, which closed in early December after opening in 2020, is reopening!  The restaurant, located at 7130 Buford Highway in Doraville, plans to reopen soon as a kosher certified establishment. Nur made the announcement Sunday via their official Facebook page.  The restaurant will operate under the supervision of the AKC (Atlanta Kosher Commission).    

[EXCLUSIVE] So Long Subway, New Bowl Business Coming to Town

A new year and new bowl concept is coming to metro Atlanta.  Mahana Fresh, a bowl-centered restaurant based in Sarasota, Florida, is opening at least two locations in metro Atlanta.  The concept, which founder and CEO Dave Wood launched in 2019, offers assorted bases, veggies and proteins which are then topped with add-ons and/or sauces.  

[OPENING ALERT] Raising Cane's To Debut First Atlanta Area Restaurant

ToNeTo Atlanta has learned that Raising Cane's plans to open their new Dacula restaurant in March.  The restaurant, located at 3485 Braselton Highway between Arby's and Starbucks, was built on the site of a demolished former BB&T bank.  ToNeTo Atlanta first reported on the Baton Rouge-based chain's plans to open in metro Atlanta in December 2021 when we exclusively reported on the Raising Cane's planned for Buford Drive near the Mall of Georgia in Buford.

Bits & Bites

Krispy Kreme has closed its donut box kiosk at Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody.  The shop closed just before the new year.   The doughnut shop opened in late 2019 in place of a kiosk that used to house an outpost of Carlo's Bakery, owned by "Cake Boss" owner Bartolo "Buddy" Valastro, Jr.  A former Carlo's Bakery at Cumberland Mall today operates as an outpost of Cami Cakes, a local cupcake shop.

[CLOSURE ALERT] Roswell Residents Will Have to Travel Further for "Brewniversity"

Taco Mac has closed its restaurant on Holcomb Bridge Road in "East Roswell."  The restaurant, which opened at 2630 Holcomb Bridge Road in 2012, was a relocation of the former Taco Mac at 8440 Holcomb Bridge Road where Hooligans Tavern is today.  There was reportedly no advance warning of the closure which took place as of Monday, January 2.  

[EXCLUSIVE] Nordstrom Finds "Presidential" Home For New Rack Store

On the heels of news that Nordstrom plans to open a new "rack" store in Kennesaw comes news that they will also open one in Snellville.  The new Nordstrom Rack will open in Presidential Markets, an existing shopping center at 1895 Scenic Highway, not far from The Shoppes at Webb Gin.  Real estate sources tell ToNeTo Atlanta that the new store will replace Bed Bath & Beyond, which is currently liquidating and is slated to close in the coming days.      

[CLOSURE ALERT] Buckhead Barbecue Joint Bows Out

After taking a hiatus in December, Greater Good BBQ has seemingly closed for good in Chastain Park.  The restaurant, which opened in September 2013, was located at 4441 Roswell Road, alongside sibling eateries Fellini's Pizza and La Fonda Latina.  Employees at both Fellini's and La Fonda confirm that the closure of Greater Good is permanent.   

[CLOSURE ALERT] Mexican Eatery Pulls Irish Goodbye in Midtown

Guac Y Margys has abruptly closed its Midtown restaurant after less than two years in business.  The restaurant, located at 502 Amsterdam Avenue, opened in place of neighborhood favorite Amsterdam Cafe in July 2021.  According to those familiar with the closure and social media posts from those involved in the restaurant, the closure caught everyone by surprise.

[UPDATE] Slutty Vegan Reveals Drive-Thru Restaurant Plans

Slutty Vegan revealed plans on December 30 for its first ever drive-thru.  The Atlanta-based vegan food chain did not indicate whether the renderings are of an actual location or just conceptualizing what a drive-thru for the brand might look like in the future.   The brand has spoken of "trying" a drive-thru since at least this past May.  

[CLOSURE ALERT] Hot Chicken Chain Can't Take The Heat, Shutters Two Stores

Joella's Hot Chicken has closed its locations in Newnan and Kennesaw.  The restaurants, both of which were converted former Pollo Tropical locations, closed as of December 22 and December 26, respectively.  The pair of restaurants represented half of the Louisville, Kentucky-based chain's Atlanta-area presence.  Two locations remain open in Akers Mill Square near Cumberland Mall and on Molly Lane, just off Highway 92 in Woodstock.
