[WOW!] Burlington Scores Several JOANN Shops

Off-price retailer Burlington has won the lease assignments of several JOANN Fabric & Crafts stores, including two in Georgia.  The craft store, which filed bankruptcy in January, reportedly shuttered 112 locations April 28 with the remaining portion of the once nearly 900 unit chain slated to close by the end of May.

In metro Atlanta, stores closed Monday at Pleasant Hill Square in Duluth and at Douglas Corners in Douglasville.  Burlington won rights to the JOANN in Suburban Plaza (2655 North Decatur Road) near Decatur.

In opening at Suburban Plaza, Burlington joins existing anchors such as LA Fitness, HomeGoods, Walmart, ROSS and Comet Pub & Lanes.

The company also won the lease assignment of the JOANN at Newnan Pavilion (1074 Bullsboro Drive) in Newnan.  JOANN currently operates a store in converted former Toys R Us in Kennesaw with real estate sources suggesting the store is incredibly sought after.

ToNeTo Atlanta reported this past November that a new Burlington store is also coming to Northeast Plaza (3307 Buford Highway) in Brookhaven, where it is replacing a pair of local tenants.  The new store, currently under construction, will be about 25,000 square feet and open beside existing junior anchor and fellow off-price retailer, DD's Discounts.

Burlington, formerly Burlington Coat Factory, has been on a significant growth spurt recently and has added several new stores to metro Atlanta.  The struggles of other retailers including Office Depot and Bed Bath & Beyond have played a significant role in providing appealing spaces for Burlington to backfill.

ToNeTo Atlanta reported in 2023 that New Jersey-based Burlington bid a total of $12 million to acquire 44 Bed Bath & Beyond leases.  The Georgia stores won by Burlington that have since been converted include those at Akers Mill Square near Cumberland Mall in Atlanta, Edgewood Retail District near Little Five Points in Atlanta, and Crossroads Marketplace on Watson Boulevard in Warner Robins.

The company has also in recent years relocated select stores to more desirable locations, including a move from North DeKalb Mall to Briarcliff Village in 2021 and a move from Roswell Road near the Big Chicken to a space along Cobb Parkway south of Dobbins before that.

Have you visited JOANN for their liquidation sale?  Are you excited to see Burlington expanding?  What is your favorite off-price retailer?

I can imagine that Kennesaw location will be sought after. They did a good job updating the old toys r us and that new south barrett reliever bridge across 75 atr Roberts Road will be opening in the next year here and really increase the traffic count there and connectivity across 75

I have not gone to the Joanns liquidation sale. I rather remember stores as they were before closing sales. Some of my friends that have gone have said prices are still high. Not excited at all about Burlington. Liked the store years ago but think it's just junk now. I much rather go to Marshall's or TJ Maxx.
