The Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen at the corner of Clairmont and Briarcliff Roads in unincorporated DeKalb County has closed. According to multiple sources close to the restaurant, the business closed as of June 28. By Thursday afternoon, the restaurant had been decommissioned (all signage removed) and its windows were boarded up.
If you've considered going to the new "Citizens [Culinary] Market," aka the food hall at the newly "reimagined" Phipps Plaza, keep reading. Rather than the 25,000 square foot food hall standing out as the "crown jewel" of the mall's multi-million dollar makeover, it's more like its "Cubic zirconia,": fake, dull, and just not as good as the real thing.
Bankrupt retailer Bed Bath & Beyond is likely in its final days as a traditional brick & mortar store. The company recently completed auctions for both its intellectual property (IP) and its store leases. The store leases included those under both its namesake Bed Bath & Beyond banner as well as its subsidiary, buybuyBABY. In Georgia, the auction included five Bed Bath & Beyond stores, of which discount retailer Burlington won three of the leases.
Chili's Grill & Bar has closed its longstanding restaurant at The Avenue West Cobb (3625 Dallas Highway) in West Cobb. The restaurant reportedly closed without notice as of June 25 with signage and fixtures swiftly removed, leaving many would-be diners disappointed and confused. The restaurant, located in a freestanding building along Dallas Highway, had been in business about 20 years, having opened shortly after the development debuted in late 2003.
We visited Nashville recently and while we won't be expanding there quite yet, we did happen upon some exciting news. A new P.F. Chang's is planned for Opry Mills! The new restaurant will open alongside an outpost of The Cheesecake Factory which debuted at the outlet mall this past fall. Both restaurants share space previously occupied by Saks OFF FIFTH.
A renamed Buckhead shopping center will soon welcome a first-to-market restaurant. Buckhead Landing, previously known to many as the "Disco Kroger" shopping center, will in 2024 welcome Burtons Grill & Bar, a "polished casual" restaurant. Based in Andover, Massachusetts, Burtons got its start in 2005 and today includes nineteen locations across eight states. In the south, the chain has a pair of locations in North Carolina and single units in South Carolina and Florida.
The short lived Ponko Chicken in Chastain Park is becoming yet another new restaurant. With a lease signed and work having quietly gone on for the past few months, Enzo's Pizza is planning to open in Chastain Square soon. The new pizza shop will open in the 1,200 square foot space vacated by franchisees of the Ponko Chicken this past September.
Dallas, Texas-based Velvet Taco plans to go OTP for their third Atlanta area location. A real estate source as well as an employee at one of the chain's existing Atlanta area locations tell ToNeTo Atlanta that the company will open in 2024 at High Street in Dunwoody.
LL Flooring (formerly Lumber Liquidators Flooring) is opening a new location in Smyrna. The new store, in the former West Marine, is opening in The Promenade (2460 Cobb Parkway), the same plaza as Best Buy and The Juicy Crab. West Marine closed its store in the center this past fall. following the August closure of longtime tenant Scalini's Italian Restaurant. The new LL Flooring marks the Richmond, Virginia-based company's 13th store in Georgia joining those in Kennesaw, Duluth, Roswell and Cumming, among others.
If you thought there was no more room in metro Atlanta for another Chick-fil-A, you were wrong. According to a well placed real estate source, Chick-fil-A has secured the soon to be vacant David's Bridal along Peachtree Road near Marshalls for a new restaurant. David's Bridal filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May, its second such filing in just the past five years. The Buckhead store is closing as part of the company's reorganization.
Atlanta is getting yet another Little Rey. Already with a location open in Piedmont Heights, a second planned for Buckhead, and a third planned for Johns Creek, a new Little Rey is planned for another OTP community. The new Little Rey will come to an as yet unbuilt outparcel of Hammond Exchange shopping center, along Hammond Drive, just off Roswell Road, a few blocks north of I-285 in Sandy Springs.
At long last, the decrepit Delk Road Kroger is being put out to pasture. According to a Kroger employee at the store, the brand-new Kroger (1310 Powers Ferry Road) is expected to open August 2, while the existing circa 1982 Kroger (1122 Powers Ferry Road) is slated to close "around the same time".
A new restaurant is coming to a familiar space in Dunwoody. Sushi Kingdom, a restaurant with one existing location in Greenville, South Carolina, has signed a lease to backfill the 7,400 square foot former Macaroni Grill turned Wild Wing Cafe in Ashford Place (4788 Ashford Dunwoody Road). The restaurant opened as a Macaroni Grill before becoming a Wild Wing in 2015. The wing joint closed last May and has been vacant since.
The first Tim Hortons location in Georgia is set to open in just a few short days. The new eatery, located in Columbus, is slated to open Friday, June 16. The first outpost of the Canadian staple known for its coffee, donuts and breakfast sandwiches, is being opened by entrepreneur Abid Khutliwala and his Purple Star Cafe Inc. Khutliwala signed a development agreement to open as many as 15 Tim Hortons in Georgia. In total, the company expects to have 30 restaurants open in Georgia by 2027, according to a March release.
O'Charley's Restaurant+Bar Sunday evening closed another metro Atlanta location. The restaurant, located in a freestanding building in East Cobb, was located at 3550 Sandy Plains Road near its intersection with Shallowford Road. According to Cobb County property records, the East Cobb restaurant was built in 2001, was nearly 7,000 square feet and sat on a little more than an acre.
Metro Atlanta's newest Chick-fil-A opens this week near Ponce City Market. The new Chick-fil-A restaurant is located at the intersection of Ponce de Leon and Boulevard and will open on Thursday, June 15. Chick-fil-A, Inc. selected Jamerian Myles, an existing Chick-fil-A Operator, as the independent franchised Owner/Operator of Chick-fil-A Ponce & Boulevard. The new restaurant joins more than 180 other Chick-fil-A restaurants serving "the wider Atlanta market."
Several well placed sources tell ToNeTo Atlanta that the owners of Little Trouble will be closing their popular cocktail bar this summer. Located in a subterranean space in Westside Provisions District, Little Trouble opened in August 2015 and quickly became a destination not only for their drinks but also for their neon lights that were quite popular with the Instagram set.

Metro Atlanta's newest Publix is slated to open June 21! The new store, which anchors the new Summerhill Station development in Summerhill, spans nearly 50,000 square feet and sports a retro-inspired exterior design. The store is located at 572 Hank Aaron Drive SE in a portion of a former Turner Field parking lot. Publix will reportedly hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 6:45 AM on the 21st to celebrate the store's opening.
After years of watching competitors grow locally and regionally, chicken tender restaurant Guthrie's appears to be in growth mode itself. A new Guthrie's is planned for the intersection of Lower Roswell and Johnson Ferry Roads in East Cobb. Specifically, the new restaurant is planned for 4774 Lower Roswell Road, where it will make use of an existing building.
At a time when it seems Burger King has lost its way and the company announcing that hundreds of restaurants will close this year, one franchisee is doubling down and investing in the future of the brand. GPS Hospitality, an Atlanta-based operator of nearly 500 units, plans to scrape and rebuild their existing Dunwoody area Burger King at 4537 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, just off I-285 and close to Georgetown shopping center.
